Hvížďalka Fortress stands in Kalenice’s château park, while St. Francis Chapel is on the village square; three named cycling routes pass through the village or have a stop there. For planning your trip, it is important to know that visits to the fortress are possible on request and by prior arrangement.

Hvížďalka Fortress: Building and Fortifications

In Kalenice’s present-day château park, the fortress survives as a single-storey building with a rectangular floor plan and a half-hipped gabled roof. The originally Gothic Hvížďalka Fortress, house number 50, is one of the village’s listed monuments. The late-Gothic tower fortress includes a barrel-vaulted cellar and a ground floor. A ditch with a rampart and an outer ditch once surrounded the complex; remnants of these fortifications survive on its east, south and west sides. The historic character of the site is therefore defined by both the building itself and the surviving traces of its fortifications.

The medieval core was remodelled during the Renaissance; around 1530, the fortress was captured and burned down. Its medieval origins, architectural alterations and a historic turning point are thus distinct stages in its history. This sequence adds the story of the complex to the features of its roof, vaulting and fortifications.

Arrange Visits in Advance

Visits to the immediate surroundings of the fortress, the Gothic cellar and part of the interior, which is being gradually restored, are possible on request. From April to September, visits can be arranged on weekends by prior agreement. By exception, other months or weekdays can also be arranged in advance. If Hvížďalka is an important reason for your trip, request a visit in advance and plan around this seasonal arrangement.

Chapel on the Village Square

Another historical perspective is offered by the chapel dedicated to St. Francis on Kalenice’s village square. It was built in 1832 on the site of an older wooden church. Compared with Hvížďalka, the focus shifts to a different period: the fortress is associated with its medieval core, Renaissance remodelling and fortifications, while the chapel reflects 19th-century construction and its wooden predecessor. Together, the two buildings offer distinct, specifically rooted themes for exploring Kalenice’s past.

Cycling Routes Through Kalenice

Two of the named cycling routes have a stated total length and pass through Kalenice. “Za Kladrubským drakem” is 10.1 kilometres long; “Krajem rybníků” is 12.8 kilometres long. Based on these figures, the second route is 2.7 kilometres longer. Another route, “Za dávných časů a jejich časoměření,” has its first stop in Kalenice, at the fortress, when coming from Horažďovice. You can therefore choose between two routes with comparable stated total distances and one route with a specifically named stop at Hvížďalka. Check the current route and conditions before setting off.
