Hájek U Bavorova is a South Bohemian village on a gentle slope. Its appearance is shaped by its medieval layout, compact development and South Bohemian farmsteads. The Gothic ruins of Helfenburk Castle lie nearby, while forests, fields and meadows frame the landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether the village layout, the landscape or the castle ruins should be the focus of your stay.
Village Layout and South Bohemian Farmhouse Architecture
About 90 percent of the settlement structure preserves its original layout from the time of its medieval founding. The buildings are grouped compactly around a spacious village square that opens onto a broad street. This makes it possible to appreciate the village both as a whole and through its individual farmsteads.
Hájek has extensive, well-preserved farmsteads, courtyards and barns. The village’s preserved appearance reflects the Baroque-influenced form of South Bohemian farmsteads. For architecture enthusiasts, these offer two distinct perspectives: the layout shows how the settlement is arranged, while the farmstead architecture reveals its built character.
Hillside Setting, Forest and Landscape Transition
The upland landscape around Hájek forms a transition between the rolling foothills of the Bohemian Forest and the flat landscape of the České Budějovice Basin. A large forest lies to the west and covers a significant part of the municipality. The settlement, fields, meadows and forests are arranged in balance within a relatively unspoiled landscape.
The highest peak also bears the name Hájek: it reaches 588 m above sea level. Together with the gentle hillside setting and the landscape transition, this elevation helps place the village in its surroundings.
Helfenburk and Planning Your Visit
Helfenburk, a 14th-century Gothic castle ruin in the forests between Bavorov and Volyně, lies near Hájek. There is a free car park on a meadow below the ruins, less than 1 km away. A well-maintained paved forest road leads to the site. Check the current local conditions before your visit.
With prior arrangement, it is possible to spend the night in the castle courtyard beneath your own shelter, provided you follow the rules in place. Confirm this option in advance. This makes clear that overnight stays are separate from visiting the ruins and subject to specific conditions.
Getting Around by Bus and Bicycle
