Nišovice lies on both banks of the Volyňka in the hilly terrain of the Volyňská vrchovina. The village offers several distinct themes to explore: mill history, smaller historic landmarks in the village, the landscape of Na opukách and cycling routes. When planning your visit, you can decide whether architectural and industrial history or the combination of river scenery and trails better suits your interests.
The Seberův watermill
The Seberův watermill complex is located beside the Volyňka and the millrace. It comprises a residential building, a mill building, a granary and farm buildings. The different types of buildings make the complex easy to understand as an ensemble: alongside the mill building are residential, storage and farm areas.
The watermill has been preserved in its 1852 form; later changes mainly involved raising the mill building. The original milling equipment and remnants of a waterwheel shaft have also been preserved. This brings architectural history and milling technology together: the raising reflects the building’s development, while the milling equipment and shaft remnants point to the technical side of the mill.
Chapel and wayside shrine
The village green is home to the Chapel of Cyril and Methodius, which was renovated from 2011 to 2014. In the direction of Volyně stands the Boží muka wayside shrine. These smaller landmarks complement the mill complex with other aspects of local history: a chapel with a specific period of renovation and a named wayside shrine in the direction of Volyně.
Landscape and access at Na opukách
Na opukách is an area of landscape significance, with scattered greenery and fragments of non-forested habitats. Access is unrestricted; by car, the site can be reached to within 250 metres. Local access conditions may change, so check the situation before your visit. Unlike the mill history, the landscape itself is the focus here.
Cycling routes through and around Nišovice
Cycling Route 1247 passes through Nišovice on the Nišovice–Volyně–Předslavice route. If you use the route number for planning, check it before setting out. Another ride starts at Nišovice railway station and follows the Volyňka along the red-marked hiking trail and Cycling Route 121. Trail conditions and signage may change; check the current route before setting out.
The two route descriptions answer different planning questions: Route 1247 identifies a route through three named places, while the ride from the railway station focuses on the Volyňka and a shared section of hiking and cycling trail. This lets you choose according to the route connection you want, without confusing the two numbers or their routes.
Another trace of local history
The leather industry is also part of the village’s history. In 1875, Joáchym Miniberger from Volyně established a branch leather factory in the meadow called Tuláků louka in Nišovice and also bought Tuláků Mill. The factory remained in the family’s ownership until 1922. This episode complements the architectural history of the Seberův watermill with a different historical reference: the dates mark the factory’s establishment and the period of family ownership.
