Brezi’s nature highlights range from a wetland with two ponds and a shallow pool to a cascade of small ponds. A chapel, crosses and a protected tree add distinctive features to the village’s history. Březí is also on the marked Blatensko Cycling Circuit No. 4. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Brezi, you can shape your stay around these different interests: amphibians and pond landscapes, village history or cycling.

Wetlands and Amphibians

The Rybník Vočert a Lazy Natural Monument is a protected wetland system comprising two ponds and a shallow pool. Fire-bellied toads and other amphibians are commonly found there; in the Czech Republic, the area is one of the most important habitats for the fire-bellied toad. The cadastral area of Březí u Blatné is also part of the natural monument.

Another natural area is the Újezdec Nature Reserve. It extends across the cadastral areas of Březí u Blatné and Újezdec u Bělčic. It protects pond communities and well-preserved adjacent habitats that are home to specially protected animal species, as well as significant stands of aquatic plants. The protected features therefore include both the ponds and the adjacent habitats.

Újezdec – Planinský rybník and Kozor comprise two small ponds that form a cascade in a shallow depression in the terrain. They are home to abundant amphibian populations; in the Czech Republic, Újezdec – Planinský rybník and Kozor are considered an important habitat for the fire-bellied toad. The two wetland areas differ in their form: Rybník Vočert a Lazy comprises two ponds and a shallow pool, while Planinský rybník and Kozor form a cascade.

The western part of the landscape around Březí is characterized by a mosaic of water, fields and forests.

A Chapel, Crosses and a Protected Tree

The village square is home to a Baroque chapel dating from 1836 and a stone cross erected in 1908. Since 1997, the chapel has been dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Anthony. A memorial to the victims of the First World War stands beside the cross. The chapel is older than the cross; it was consecrated later.

Two other crosses provide additional points of reference in time and place. A cross dating from 1860 stands on a hill in the direction of Hvožďany. The other is located at the eastern edge of the village and dates from 1907. A local resident had it erected as a sign of penance. The three crosses can be distinguished by their different locations: the village square, the hill in the direction of Hvožďany and the eastern edge of the village.

The protected Divadelní lípa stands in the courtyard of the local inn at house No. 33. A historical survey recorded a height of 18 metres and a trunk circumference of 675 centimetres; later measurements may differ slightly. The tree adds another protected site to the village’s stone landmarks.
