Nicov brings together Romanesque architectural history and folk art, along with viewpoints and outdoor trails. These attractions are easy to distinguish when planning a stay: Kostel sv. Martina represents the village’s history, Kohoutí kříž combines a work of folk art with panoramic views, and marked trails offer their own points of interest. In winter, there is also a cross-country skiing option. The choices range from a cultural visit in the village to seasonal activities and destinations in the surrounding landscape.

Romanesque architecture and history in Nicov

Kostel sv. Martina, a late Romanesque building from the 13th century, stands in Nicov. It is considered the highest-altitude Romanesque building in Bohemia. From the early 14th century until 1420, the church was home to a Benedictine provostry belonging to Ostrov Monastery. Its construction date and later monastic history provide two distinct historical reference points: the architecture dates to the 13th century, while the provostry points to its connection with Ostrov Monastery.

The porch is freely accessible, offering a view into the nave. Occasional services or maintenance work may affect access; if you plan to look inside, check the situation before your visit.

Folk art and viewpoints

Kohoutí kříž in Nicov is a notable work of folk art. The copy, now standing at the edge of the forest about 0.5 km northeast of Nicov, dates from 2005. Kohoutí kříž offers panoramic views. Thus, alongside its cultural and historical significance, the site also offers a perspective on the landscape.

Walking and cycling routes

Marked hiking trails and signposted cycling routes pass through the municipal area of Nicov. These offer two different approaches to planning a trip; check the signs and trail markings before setting out, as they may change.

Marked hiking trails meet at the summit of Královský kámen. From there, views extend across the southern Šumava towards Boubín and Třístoličník. The summit and trail junction make this a clear hiking destination. Visibility varies with vegetation and weather.

Winter trails and nature trail

In winter, Nicov has areas prepared for cross-country skiing, with a groomed trail towards Churáňov, Zadov and Javorník in the Šumava. Snow conditions and grooming affect the trail conditions; check them before your trip.

The “Keltové na Šumavě” nature trail leads from Popelná, near Nicov, to Obří hrad. It is 1.5 km long one way. This distance therefore does not describe a loop.

Obří hrad near Popelná

Obří hrad near Popelná, close to Nicov, lies in Zone I of Šumava National Park. The site is on a wooded hill above the Losenice valley and offers views. Archaeological remains include double defensive walls and a central acropolis. The terrain and archaeological layout provide two perspectives on the same destination: the hill forms the landscape setting, while the walls and acropolis are the archaeological highlights.
