A fortress with a preserved black kitchen, Renaissance sgraffito on the complex and a small choir gallery in the village chapel give Vlksice several distinct historical points of interest. The protected hilly landscape of Jistebnická vrchovina Nature Park, with its fields, meadows and small wooded areas, adds to the picture. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing the fortress’s visiting arrangements from the opportunities for fishing and the bus connections.

Fortress and Historical Traces

Remnants of Renaissance sgraffito are visible on Vlksice Fortress and the adjoining courtyard wall. The fortress also has a preserved black kitchen; its chimney is unique in Central Europe for its size. These two details draw attention to different parts of the structure: the decoration on the fortress and courtyard wall, and the preserved kitchen.

At House No. 1, a still-visible earth embankment and mound probably mark the site of a fortified feudal residence that already existed at the beginning of the 14th century. This early historical reference adds a distinct clue to Vlksice’s history alongside the later traces at the fortress.

Visits and Performances

The fortress is not open to the public without an appointment. Visits can be arranged in advance with the owner. During a guided tour, she may lead visitors through the fortress in historical costume; when arranging a date, ask whether this format is available for your visit. Arrangements and tour formats may change, so it is advisable to check what is available before travelling.

The Divadlo Kašpar stages recurring open-air performances at the fortress; individual programmes vary. If you would like to plan a performance into your visit, check the dates for your travel period. This allows you to plan a possible event separately from an arranged fortress visit, without assuming that the changing programmes are a fixed offering.

Village Square and Landscape

Vlksice lies in a valley between the Smutná River and the Dobřemilický stream. In the area, Jistebnická vrchovina Nature Park protects a varied hilly landscape of fields, meadows and small wooded areas. Your trip can therefore combine two distinct interests: the village’s historic buildings and the protected landscape with its specifically named features.

A Neo-Romanesque chapel dating from 1900 stands in the village square. It has a small choir gallery, and its façade also bears a memorial plaque to the victims of the First World War. These details give the chapel its own historical significance without conflating it with the fortress.

Fishing and Getting Around

Sport fishing is available at Rybník Dolejší. There are three fishing platforms, each with space for a maximum of two anglers. If you plan to fish, take this capacity limit into account. Booking and access arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

Vlksice has a bus stop. Public bus services run in the direction of Milevsko, Nadějkov and Chyšky. Since timetables may change, check the connections for your travel dates.
