Wittingau combines Renaissance architecture with exhibitions about the history of pond building and nature. The Renaissance château Státní zámek Třeboň stands on the southwest side of Třeboň’s historic centre; it was first mentioned in 1374. The preserved Renaissance building Dům Štěpánka Netolického is also located in the historic centre. Its interactive permanent exhibition explores Třeboň’s pond-building heritage, as well as the life and work of Štěpánek Netolický. This offers different ways to discover the area’s cultural history: through a château and through an exhibition house that connects local heritage with a specific person.

Understanding the landscape and nature

Dům přírody Třeboňska has been operating in the historic centre since 2010 and was the first House of Nature in Czechia. As a visitor centre, it provides information about the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve, educational trails, and tourist attractions in the local landscape. The permanent exhibition “Krajina a lidé” explores the natural and landscape history of the Třeboňsko area and offers engaging learning activities for children and adults.

The exhibition themes of the two houses differ considerably: Dům Štěpánka Netolického focuses on pond-building heritage and Netolický himself, while Dům přírody focuses on nature, the landscape, and finding your way around the area. If you choose what to visit based on your interests, this distinction can help you separate cultural history from learning about the landscape.

The tower of the Old Town Hall offers another perspective on the area. It is square and 31 metres high; its gallery looks out over Třeboň and the surrounding green-blue landscape. This viewpoint complements the exhibitions and historic buildings with a view across the town and its surroundings.

Seasonal plants and guided tours

Hortus Botanicus Třeboň adds a seasonal botanical highlight. During the visitor season, the garden displays selected tropical and subtropical plant species from the Southern Hemisphere. Since 2016, it has also included an exhibition of carnivorous plants from around the world. When planning your visit, note the difference from the permanent exhibitions at the two houses: the plant display is specifically tied to the visitor season.

Guided tours of Kostel Panny Marie Královny a sv. Jiljí include the church, the cloister, and a garden with a fountain. This is a different way to visit from exploring an exhibition independently: the tour covers several named parts of the church complex.

Beer tasting and peat treatments

At Zbrojnice, a beer bar in a cellar at Pivovar Regent, you can taste unfiltered, unpasteurised beer. The tasting offers an insight into local beer culture.

Other distinctive features of Wittingau include peat treatments. Processed peat, or medicinal mud, is used for peat baths and wraps, particularly to treat musculoskeletal disorders. Alongside architecture, exhibitions, and nature, the area’s offerings therefore also include a local treatment tradition.

Before your trip, check the latest visiting arrangements for the exhibitions and château tours, access to the town hall tower gallery, and the Hortus visitor season.
