Starý Bozdechov offers two distinct ways to enjoy a stay: its local history and cycling tours through the village and its surroundings. A memorial plaque on the former school building commemorates the local partisan movement; the tours described each focus on different routes, landscapes and destinations. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether historical connections or cycling will be the main theme.
Local History and Memorial Sites
The bell structure in Starý Bozděchov is a Šrák made of two poles joined together. Along with the memorial plaque on the former school building, it points to two different cultural themes: a specific type of construction and the memory of the local partisan movement.
Other cultural sites include Kaplička u Starého Bozděchova, a chapel in the cadastral area of Starý Bozděchov; Kříž severně od Starého Bozděchova, a roadside cross in the cadastral area; and Památník stromu svobody ve starém Bozděchově, a memorial site in the cadastral area. The chapel, roadside cross and memorial site are distinct forms. If you are interested in religious architectural features, you can focus on the chapel and roadside cross; the memorial to the Tree of Freedom adds a commemorative aspect.
Kříž v poli u Starého Bozděchova lies in a ploughed field and has no access path. If you plan to visit, take this limitation into account and do not treat it as a waypoint with regular access. A historic path that later became a road connected the Bozděchov fortress with Jindřichův Hradec. Its transformation from path to road adds a connection beyond the local area to the village’s history.
Landscape and Cycling Tours
The landscape also reveals different connections. A notable tree in Starý Bozděchov is one of the area’s landscape features. Nearby is the Stržená hráz Natural Monument: it covers 8 ha and was designated a natural monument in 1977. Thus, a single landscape feature and a named protected area with its own stated area sit side by side.
Two different routes are described for cyclists. A cycling tour starting in Nová Včelnice passes through Nový Bozděchov and Starý Bozděchov; it then continues through the forest, passing several ponds. A longer cycling tour in the area goes via Horní Radouň, Starý Bozděchov and Bukovka to the Stržená hráz Natural Monument. From Bukovka, it follows cycling route No. 1215 and then either a blue-marked hiking trail or a convenient, unmarked forest path.
The tours differ in their described routes and destinations: after passing through the two Bozděchov villages, the route starting in Nová Včelnice continues through the forest and past ponds. The longer tour leads to the natural monument and offers two route options from Bukovka. This gives you the choice between a route with a forest and pond section and a tour with a named landscape destination.
