Domanín U Třeboně can be explored through its pond landscape, educational trails and religious buildings. The village lies on the western edge of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and is part of the Rožmberk pond system. The landscape and cultural history offer different perspectives for planning your trip: the educational trails cover ecological and historical topics, while the churches and crypt tell the story of architecture and local history.
Ponds and trails
The Nový pond in Domanín is used as a natural outdoor swimming area; sport fishing is also possible there. Local rules apply. Swimming conditions may change, so check them before your visit.
The protected Eurasian otter is found in Domanín, as is the white-tailed eagle. These species add to the character of the landscape, but their presence does not mean you are likely to see them on any particular trail.
The Cesta kolem Světa educational trail is a 12-kilometre circular route around the Svět pond, intended for walkers. It runs through the cadastral area of Domanín u Třeboně. Its 16 information panels cover ecology, typical plant and animal species, the history of fish farming and the spa industry, and the development of folk architecture.
The Okolo Třeboně cycling educational trail offers a different distance and mode of travel: the circular route is 39 kilometres long and includes 22 information stations in Czech and English. In Domanín, it runs along the dam of the Opatovický pond. The distances of 12 and 39 kilometres therefore refer to two different educational trails and their respective circular routes.
Religious buildings and local history
The cemetery Church of St. Giles is a single-nave church dating from the 16th century, with a tower façade at the front. It served as the Schwarzenbergs’ burial place from 1784 to 1876. The church interior also features a fresco dating from 1588 by Tobiáš Fels of Jihlava.
The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1924 and 1925 and consecrated on 28 September 1925. Its interior received wall paintings by Karel Svolinský in 1926. The chapel is considered a valuable example of modern religious architecture from the interwar period; its construction and furnishing give it a distinct place alongside the older Church of St. Giles.
The Schwarzenberg Crypt is at the entrance to Domanín from the direction of Třeboň, on the southeast side of the Svět pond. It is surrounded by an English-style landscape park. The two-storey Neo-Gothic building is shaped like a regular octagon; inside are 26 coffins. Its location, park and architectural form offer several concrete points of reference for placing the crypt within the local history of architecture and the Schwarzenberg family.
Domanín was first mentioned in writing in 1367 as villa Domanyn. In 1376, part of the village passed to the Augustinian monastery in Třeboň. The Svatováclavské slavnosti s poutí (St. Wenceslas Festival and Pilgrimage) is the municipality’s largest regular cultural event. The programme and individual dates vary; if you would like to plan your stay around it, check the event dates before travelling.
