Kalsching combines a designated historic townscape with cultural and natural attractions. The town’s conservation area, the Church of St Mary Magdalene and the large square give the place a cultural and historical focus. At the same time, Kalsching lies in the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area and is a starting point for routes in that direction. When planning your trip, it is worth considering local history, exhibitions and cycling as separate areas of interest.

The Square, Conservation Area and Pillory

Chvalšiny is designated as an urban conservation area. The large, spindle-shaped square is about 530 metres long and rises gently uphill at a right angle from the stream. Its length, starting point by the stream and course up the slope give a clear picture of its spatial form. This geometry in particular makes the square a distinctive feature for anyone interested in the townscape.

The pillory, with a statue of St John of Nepomuk, is a four-sided granite column with chamfered edges, dating from 1690. It is one of the few surviving pillories. Its precisely identified form and date give the monument a specific historical context that goes beyond a general description as a column.

Church of St Mary Magdalene: History and Access

The Church of St Mary Magdalene was built between 1487 and 1507 in the Late Gothic style. It is considered an important work of the Rosenberg building workshop. Its construction dates, style and attribution offer a clearly defined art-historical focus for a stay in Kalsching.

Access is an important consideration when planning: the church is usually open only during regular Sunday services. If you would like to see the interior, check the access arrangements in advance and plan accordingly. You cannot assume that the interior will be open for visits at any time.

Museum and Landscape Connections

The Schwarzenberg Floating Canal Museum is housed in a carefully restored historic building on the square in the municipality of Chvalšiny. Its exhibitions provide information about the nature and natural monuments of Šumava. The museum therefore focuses on the landscape and its natural monuments, while the church is primarily associated with its architectural history.

Kalsching lies in the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area. Routes from here head towards Blanský les. Together with the museum’s exhibition theme, this gives the area two connections to nature: the routes draw attention to the landscape, while the exhibitions focus on the nature and natural monuments of Šumava. This allows you to choose between focusing your stay on the town or taking an excursion towards the protected area.

A Cycling Route for a Separate Active Pursuit

The “Rediscovered Kájovsko–Boleticko” cycling route starts in Chvalšiny and follows cycling route 1139. It forms a circular route about 20 kilometres long, including detours. The route uses only existing marked cycle paths and Class III roads. Its course and approximate length are specified, without assuming a particular travel time or level of difficulty. Since route descriptions can change, check the current route before setting off.

Check the relevant conditions for the aspects that matter to your trip, then search for hotels in Kalsching to suit your plans.
