Several cycling routes pass through Muckov, differing in length, course and thematic focus. The history of limestone is a second point of interest: it ranges from the rock pillars in the quarries to the reported industrial use of finely ground limestone.

Limestone and Local History

The Muckovské vápencové lomy are located in a forest about 300 metres west of Muckov. Their striking features include monumental rock pillars. The quarries are botanically valuable, serve as winter quarters for bats and preserve remains of underground crystal limestone mining. The Horem lesem route lists the Muckovské vápencové lomy as one of its points of interest and also notes that they are closed to the public.

The settlement of Muckov has been documented since 1518. In 1914, finely ground Muckov limestone is said to have been used as a medicinal powder in first-aid boxes for soldiers departing for the front. It is also said to have been supplied to Bayer in Germany and to a company in Paris that made cosmetic powder. The historical account thus mentions both its use in first-aid boxes and deliveries to two different recipients.

The Naučný okruh Světlík passes through places whose history reaches back to the medieval settlement of the Šumava region. The routes therefore take in both Muckov’s specific settlement history and a broader regional historical context.

Cycling Routes Through Muckov

The Květušínská cesta is a 47-kilometre cycling route with a paved surface. It follows cycle route 1245 between Světlík and Černá v Pošumaví, passing through Muckov.

The 74.2-kilometre Krumlovská cycling route also passes through Muckov. This circular route connects Lipensko and Český Krumlov and offers nature and cultural experiences.

The route to the Olšina pond runs from Černá along the Muckovské vápencové lomy to Muckov, where it turns towards Mokrá. Its arc-shaped course goes around Malé Lipno and the Olšina pond. The Naučný okruh Světlík also starts in Černá and passes through Muckov on its way to Světlík.

Muckov also lies on the return leg of the Horem lesem route to Černá v Pošumaví, which also passes through Slavkovice.

For an initial comparison by distance and surface, the two cycling routes can be considered side by side: the Květušínská cesta is 47 kilometres long and paved; the Krumlovská cycling route covers 74.2 kilometres. As a circular route, it connects Lipensko and Český Krumlov, so the route format is another point of difference besides distance.

Both routes starting in Černá pass through Muckov, but then head in different directions towards different destinations: the Olšina route turns towards Mokrá and goes around Malé Lipno and the Olšina pond, while the Naučný okruh continues to Světlík. The route beyond Muckov is a specific difference to consider when choosing between them. Seasonal conditions can vary, and trail conditions may change.
