A market day, a museum visit or getting active along the Vltava: a trip to České Budějovice 7 offers a range of options. The city’s attractions include everything from the goods on offer at Piarist Square to exhibitions, historic buildings and riverside routes. You can choose how to balance culture and outdoor activities according to your interests.

Markets and brewing history

The markets at Piarist Square take place year-round on Thursdays and Saturdays. Check the market days before your trip. Stalls offer agricultural produce, fruit and vegetables, baked goods, honey, preserves, meat and sausages, and dairy products. The selection also includes handmade and artisan goods made by their sellers; which vendors are there may vary.

The Budějovický Budvar brewery visitor centre offers a different perspective on local history. Its multimedia exhibition, “Příběh Budějovického piva,” presents the history of brewing in České Budějovice. If you plan a visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Exhibitions and historic buildings

Two exhibitions at the South Bohemian Museum offer different perspectives: “Příběh města” presents artefacts relating to the history of České Budějovice since its founding. The permanent natural history, archaeological and ethnographic exhibition covers 730 square metres on the second floor of the historic museum building. The museum’s exhibitions also document the history, culture, folk art and nature of the South Bohemian Region. Check the current exhibition programme before your trip.

The buildings also tell stories of different historical functions. St Nicholas Church was built in the 13th century as the parish church of the royal city. After the Diocese of České Budějovice was founded, it was elevated to cathedral status and became the first and principal church of the entire diocese. The former Dominican monastery with the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary is one of the city’s oldest and most valuable historic monuments.

The Wortner House on U Černé věže Street is a restored building from the Gothic-Renaissance period. Since 1993, it has housed a branch of the Alšova jihočeská galerie; the house also hosts temporary exhibition projects. The current programme may change, so check before visiting. Astronomy and related sciences are the focus of the České Budějovice Observatory and Planetarium, which conducts research and introduces these subjects to the general public.

For views over the city, the Black Tower has an observation platform 46 metres above the ground. It can be reached via 225 mostly wooden steps; check access before your visit. Přemysl Otakar II Square offers a different perspective: it covers more than one hectare and is one of the largest square city squares in Czechia.

Parks, cycle routes and the Vltava

At 68 hectares, Stromovka Park is the largest park in České Budějovice. Cyclists and inline skaters use its paved and unpaved paths. For longer routes along the Vltava, the Vltava Trail offers 60 kilometres of well-maintained routes for cycling, inline skating and walking. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Another route for cyclists is Cycle Route 12. It runs north to south along the Vltava and forms part of an international cycle route that passes through the city area from Germany to Austria. The Vltava Trail also includes a 98-kilometre water route: it starts at the Lanna Shipyard in České Budějovice and runs via Hluboká nad Vltavou and Týn nad Vltavou to Koloděje nad Lužnicí. If you plan to take the water route, check the current access and service conditions in advance.
