The irregularly shaped village green is the center around which Lažany was laid out; two ponds lie on it. This layout gives the village a distinct character: the green defines the settlement pattern, while the ponds provide their own focal point within it. The first impression is therefore of the village’s structure, before its historical connections to castles, paths and mills come into view.

Paths through landscape and history

The Kosí potok nature trail is eight kilometers long and introduces visitors to the nature and history of the valley. The path to Volfštejn Castle continues to the summit of Vlčí hora. This brings together two distinct focuses: a nature trail covering nature and history, and a castle path leading to a summit. The trail’s length provides a concrete measure for planning; its content connects two perspectives on the valley.

Castles in the landscape and local history

The ruins of Třebel Castle lie in the settlement of the same name, on a rocky promontory above the Kosí potok. Since 1958, Třebel Castle has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its location and protected status complement each other as two distinct aspects: the rocky outcrop places the ruins in the landscape, while the protected status gives them a cultural and historical classification.

Volfštejn Castle was founded on a spur of Vlčí hora near Černošín. The path to the castle continues to the summit of Vlčí hora. The summit is thus named as a continuation of the path, not as a separate, unrelated destination. On an outing, the castle connection can be combined with a specific landscape destination.

Lažany’s historical affiliations are also connected to both castles: in the second half of the 14th century, the village belonged to Volfštejn Castle; later, it belonged to the estate of nearby Třebel Castle. This chronology distinguishes two phases of the village’s history. Volfštejn represents the earlier connection, while the affiliation with the Třebel estate is mentioned as later.

Mill history by prior arrangement

The old Německý mlýn mill is located in Lažany, in the cadastral area of Lažany u Černošína. It can be visited by prior arrangement, so please arrange your visit in advance. A revision of the Berní rula from 1713 describes Německý mlýn as a mill with three wheels powered by a constant water supply. The description offers a concrete glimpse into the history of the mill: it records both the number of wheels and the water conditions documented for this historic mill.

Wet meadows and protected plants

The Pod Volfštejnem protected area includes wet, marshy meadows with typical plant communities and numerous specially protected plant species. This gives the natural setting a specific focus: the type of meadow and the plant communities found there. Visitors particularly interested in habitats and plants will find a different focus here than in the history of castles and mills.
