Krsy offers several ways to explore its history: the Church of St Lawrence preserves Gothic origins and later alterations, Umíř recalls a vanished settlement, and Polínský vrch shapes the municipality’s landscape. Architectural history, surviving traces of a settlement and landscape themes thus come together, while belonging to different periods and having distinct characters.

Church and Local History

The Church of St Lawrence in Krsy is originally Gothic and dates from the early 14th century. It was later remodelled in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Its architectural history therefore combines a medieval origin with later changes; the building cannot be reduced to a single stylistic period.

The furnishings add another distinct historical note: the church preserves Late Gothic statues of St Anne and St Blaise dating from around 1500. While the architectural history encompasses the development of the entire building, the two figures draw attention to individual works of Late Gothic art.

Opposite the church stands the former vicarage, a protected Late Baroque building dating from the second half of the 18th century. Its location creates a direct spatial relationship with the church, while its date adds a later historical note. Those interested in church architecture can therefore consider a second building alongside the church, one dating from a different period.

Umíř: Traces of a Vanished Settlement

Umíř is a vanished settlement in the municipality of Krsy, located in the Manětínská hornatina Nature Park. Five wells, several cellars and a chapel have survived there; the chapel is the settlement’s last surviving building.

The chapel is important for understanding the site, but it does not tell the whole story: the wells and cellars add further surviving traces. Unlike the Church of St Lawrence, the focus here is not the development of a single building, but the remains of an entire vanished settlement. The nature park setting and the architectural traces give Umíř different yet connected points of reference.

Landscape at Polínský vrch

Polínský vrch lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Krsy and is a prominent feature of the local landscape. Evidence of prehistoric settlement and a former basalt quarry can be found in the hill’s vicinity. The hill can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: as a defining landscape feature and in connection with evidence of early settlement and former quarrying.

Activities at Polínský vrch include climbing and camping. If you are planning either activity, check the local rules beforehand.

Viewpoint at the Krsy Environmental Centre

On the south side of the Krsy Environmental Centre, there is a viewpoint overlooking the village square, the Church of St Lawrence and the picturesque landscape horizon. The view stretches from the village square, past the church and out to the landscape horizon, linking the village and the wider landscape.
