Sloupnice combines a long history of settlement with distinctive architecture and local hiking opportunities. Its origins as an extensive forest-clearing village provide a historical setting; churches, a chapel, a monument, and the Sokolovna represent later periods. Culture and local history are a major focus, complemented by hikes and—weather permitting and with sufficient snow cover—cross-country skiing trips.

From a forest-clearing village to the modern Sokolovna

During the High Medieval colonization, an extensive forest-clearing village developed around the Sloupnický potok stream. This settlement was one of the largest in the Orlickoústecko region. Sloupnice’s history therefore extends beyond individual buildings to the development of the settlement itself.

The Sokolovna is a distinctive local example of sports architecture. Local architect Vojtěch Vanický built it in 1930 in the style of Czech architectural modernism, influenced by Dutch brick architecture. Its architectural history offers a different perspective on Sloupnice from that of the older sacred buildings: here, the focus is on 20th-century architecture and its international influences.

The Church of St. Nicholas combines Gothic origins with its present-day Baroque appearance: around 1712, the rural church without a tower was remodeled in the Baroque style. The Evangelical church represents the emergence of tolerance churches shortly after the 1781 Patent of Toleration. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk makes its own distinctive impression: it is an unusual open chapel in the form of a canopy over a Baroque statue dating from 1769.

The Socha Svobody monument commemorates the victims of the First World War and dates from the 1920s. After the Second World War, it was also dedicated to victims of that war from the surrounding area. Together with the churches, the monument shows how different historical periods in Sloupnice each found their own architectural or commemorative expression.

Hiking and seasonal activities

The local hiking club organizes hikes in the area around Sloupnice. Weather permitting, it also organizes cross-country skiing trips there; this seasonal activity depends on snow conditions. Visitors wishing to combine their stay with outdoor activity can choose between hikes and a winter option that is explicitly weather-dependent.

The Pochod Sloupenskými lesy offers a choice of route lengths: the 2026 event listing gives hiking routes of 8, 15, and 25 kilometers. Route options may vary from one edition to another. If you are planning to take part on a specific date, check the details for that edition.

The Sokolovna is also used for cultural events as well as sports. A visitor description from April 2026 mentions theater performances, balls, concerts, and other cultural events there. Individual event programs may change; if you are planning to attend an event, check the specific dates.

For a stay in Sloupnice, you can weigh two interests against each other: architectural and local history on the one hand, and organized activities in the surrounding area on the other. In winter, cross-country skiing is also an option, but only when the weather is suitable and there is enough snow.
