Gothic architectural history in Práčov, local paper history and a nature reserve offer different perspectives on Svídnice. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether buildings and their history, or the landscape and marked routes, should be the main focus.

Church and Historic Buildings

The Church of St James in Práčov is the oldest surviving building in the municipality of Svídnice. Part of the building dates from 1364 to 1369. The church is considered an important example of mature Gothic architecture from the Luxembourg era. The organ is also part of the building’s history: it dates from 1815 and was returned to service in 2015.

Another cultural monument stands in Svídnice’s village square: the bell tower, with its Neoclassical octagonal base and a roof. Remains of a prehistoric hillfort can also be seen in Práčov. Parts of the fortification system are particularly visible along the path to Trpišov; most of the site is on private property.

Paper History and Economic Past

The paper mill in Svídnice was founded in 1714 and expanded to include a mill at the beginning of the 19th century. Building No. 9 by the reservoir, also known as Horní mlýn, is a privately owned 18th-century building associated with the municipality’s most significant period of economic prosperity. The mill’s founding and its later expansion give the local history a chronological thread; the historic building also represents the importance of this economic sector.

Nature Conservation and Landscape

The Strádovské Peklo Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Svídnice u Slatiňan and covers 87.32 hectares. It protects a complex of near-natural scree forests with endangered plant and animal species. The stated area and conservation focus give the reserve a distinct landscape character, different from the town’s architectural and industrial history.

The area around Svídnice offers further landscape and historical points of interest. The ruins of Strádov Castle lie southeast of Práčov, on a rocky promontory on the right bank of the Chrudimka; the castle dates from the 14th century. Slavická obora lies southwest of Práčov, where red deer and mouflon are kept.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The marked routes differ in their courses and destinations. A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Svídnice. The yellow-marked hiking trail runs from Slatiňany to Práčov; a marked local cycling route also passes through Práčov. These details help you distinguish the routes by their markings and the places named, without combining them into a single tour.

The Vlastivědná stezka Krajem Chrudimky nature trail runs between the Křižanovice Reservoir and the Práčov balancing reservoir. In this section, the Chrudimka has carved a deep, canyon-like inversion valley. Alongside the buildings, this offers a specific landscape and the two reservoirs as reference points for planning a trip.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Svídnice, these different points of interest can help you decide where to start: church and industrial history, protected nature or marked routes. The places and trails mentioned can be considered as separate themes; no set order or combined route is implied.
