The reservoir, castle ruins, churches, and educational trails give Seč several distinct themes: architectural history, landscape, and routes with different itineraries. For planning, it helps to consider these highlights separately. The routes range from a 22-kilometre connection between several towns to an educational trail that is 82 kilometres long in total, including the access route. The connection between several towns and the educational trail with its access route are two different routes, not one combined circuit.

Reservoir and protected landscape

The Seč Reservoir was built between 1924 and 1935. It lies on the Chrudimka River in the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area. The history of the reservoir and its location in a protected landscape therefore offer two distinct perspectives on the area.

The Oheb Nature Reserve is also located near Seč. It protects natural scree forests, relict pine forests, and acidic beech forests. The rocky habitats provide nesting grounds for the eagle owl. Thus, the waterside setting and the forest and rocky habitats are distinct natural features.

Castle ruins and churches

The ruins of Oheb Castle include a partially filled-in moat, remains of the fortification walls, a tower with remnants of the entrance gate, and two gun bastions. Together, these structures describe different elements of the fortifications. Those interested in historic architecture will find more than a single remnant of a wall here: the moat, tower, and bastions are distinct parts of the surviving structure.

The late Renaissance Church of St. Lawrence stands in Seč’s market square. It was built between 1610 and 1620, and large parts of its interior have been preserved in their original condition. Alongside its construction date, the preserved interior is another distinctive feature of the church.

The Church of St. Stephen stands in Seč’s cemetery. The cemetery wall offers views of the Železné hory landscape. Unlike St. Lawrence, whose construction date and interior are the main points of interest, St. Stephen is associated with its location in the cemetery and the view of the landscape.

Educational trails and cycling routes

The Krajem Železných hor educational trail runs from Seč via Třemošnice to Ronov nad Doubravou and is 22 kilometres long. It is suitable for walkers and cyclists and has 15 information stops.

The Krajem Chrudimky educational trail follows the Chrudimka River and is 82 kilometres long in total. This total includes the access route from Čachnov railway station. There are 31 information stops along the route, including the stop “Seč – přehrada”. When comparing the two educational trails, it is therefore worth considering their different itineraries and the fact that the 82 kilometres includes the access route.

For a cycling loop, cycle route 4114 is also relevant: it runs from Seč towards Ústupky and forms part of a circuit via Ústupky, Přemilov, Klokočov, Březinky, Dolní Ves, and Horní Ves, returning to Seč. Before setting off, check the route numbering and surface conditions.

Water skiing at the reservoir

Water skiing is available at the reservoir. Check with the operator before your visit to confirm availability.
