A 17 km circular route with 14 information boards takes you through Sobotín’s local themes: history, nature and life in the area today. Along the way, you can also learn about the iron industry and visit special places such as the Church of St. Lawrence. You can tailor your stay to whether you’re primarily interested in hiking, experiencing the landscape or discovering the area’s history.

Hiking and navigation in Sobotin

The Sobotín Circular Route is a 17 km tourist trail. There are 14 information boards along the route, with benches at some stops. The boards share information about local history, life today, and the area’s flora and fauna. So the route is not just a hiking trail; it also offers several topics to explore along the way.

Maps are available at four points along the route to help you find your way: in front of the Motorest Permoník, in front of the Motorest Ztracenka, in Rudoltice at house number 133, and at the Klein family mausoleum. Maps are also available from the Sobotín Municipal Office. One stop is about 100 m from the Smrčina Natural Monument. This is the distance between the stop and the natural monument; it should not be confused with the overall length of the circular route. The hills above Sobotin also offer views of the Hrubý Jeseník panorama.

Nature around Smrčina

Smrčina connects a specific natural setting with the topic of wildlife: the lesser horseshoe bat hibernates in a local adit. In the forest section of the Sobotín Circular Route, you can find the white helleborine and the protected Turk’s cap lily. If you are especially interested in plants, you’ll find two named species here, with the forest described as their habitat; for wildlife, the lesser horseshoe bat is another local point of interest.

The views and nature themes offer different points of interest: the hills above Sobotin showcase the Hrubý Jeseník panorama, while Smrčina and the forest section provide information about the natural monument, wildlife and plants. These details give you specific ways to tailor your hike to the topics that interest you.

Church, castle and the iron industry

The Church of St. Lawrence was built in 1605 on the site of a former Protestant house of prayer. An incident in the church was connected with the witch trials, in which hundreds more people fell victim. Sobotín Castle was built on the site of an old iron hammer mill. During renovations in the 1840s, it was given a Romantic historicist design; it was surrounded by a castle park, an ornamental pond and several small park buildings.

The iron industry shaped the history of the area over several centuries. Its tradition dates back to the beginning of the 17th century and included bloomery furnaces, iron hammer mills and foundries. At the height of its prosperity in 1852–1853, Sobotín became a centre of the Austrian iron industry. The operation, which had a branch in Štěpánov near Olomouc, employed 2,000 workers. The early facilities and the later period of prosperity represent two distinct phases: the long development of industrial work and the importance the operation attained in the 19th century.

More trails and activities

Traťovka is a junction for hiking, cycling and winter cross-country ski trails. Different ways of getting around come together here, including cross-country skiing in winter. Access points for the Mineralogical Educational Trail include Sobotín railway station, the Vernířovice Municipal Office with its parking area by the church, and Resort Sobotín with the parking area by Motorest Permoník. Check current transport and parking conditions in advance if you plan to use one of these access points.

Another way to learn about local nature is to visit the rescue station for native crayfish. The public can learn about crayfish conservation there through training sessions, excursions and specialist activities. As these activities should not be assumed to be offered as regular visitor experiences, check in advance what visits are possible.
