Černotín can be understood through a precise topographic profile: from Hluzovský kopec at 365 m above sea level, the terrain descends south to the Bečva valley at 250 m above sea level. These elevations describe the transition from the higher point to the valley. The predominantly Devonian limestone bedrock is another defining feature. Anyone interested in the landscape can therefore consider Černotín both in terms of its relief and its rock.

Limestone and local geological history

Local limestone was also a material: it was used to produce lime and cement, and lime production in Černotín is documented from the 19th century onward. This connects geology with industrial history: one describes the predominant bedrock, the other its historical use. Another geological point of interest is the abandoned quarry. It is the type locality and a registered stratotype locality for the Černotín Sandstones. For travellers interested in geology, this creates a direct link between the name of the sandstones and a place in Černotín.

The abandoned quarry is freely accessible; you can approach it by car to within 250 m, and there is no prohibition on driving in. Check local access conditions before your visit.

Cycling routes in Černotín

Two details are useful for planning your cycling route. The Bečva Cycle Route runs through the cadastral area of Černotín and forms part of the important cycling route No. 50. In addition, a 3 m-wide connection runs along the Hluzovský potok to the Bečva Cycle Route in Černotín. The route number identifies the Bečva Cycle Route; the width and course refer to the connection along the stream. You can therefore factor the route connection and the specific connecting section into your plans separately.

Church, votive offering and event

The parish church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in 1868 by master builder Alois Jambor from Hranice to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of Cyril and Methodius’s arrival in Moravia. This occasion gives the building’s history a clear historical context. Another testament to the past is the statue of Panny Marie Hostýnské, erected as a votive offering in 1903. The two historical references have different emphases: the church commemorates the anniversary, while the statue’s significance lies in its role as a votive offering.

The Moravská brána event takes place in a renewed format every June.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: the cycling route, geology and lime production, historic buildings, or the June Moravská brána event each appeal to different travel interests.
