Víchová nad Jizerou brings together several different travel interests: the medieval fortification of Hrádek, examples of folk architecture, and the 11-kilometer Víchovský Trail with its landscape gallery. The village also spans distinct elevations, from the Jizera Valley up the slopes, with views of the panorama of the western Krkonoše. When choosing accommodation for your stay, you can consider whether historical traces, protected nature, or an art-themed trail is more important to your plans.
Landscape and protected nature
Víchová nad Jizerou stretches from the Jizera Valley up the slopes. There is an elevation difference of 200 meters between the lower and upper parts, and the municipality offers views of the panorama of the western Krkonoše. Parts of Víchová nad Jizerou lie in Zone III, while others lie in the KRNAP buffer zone. The Danehlova lípa and the Lípa na Koutě are two protected notable trees. The municipality also contains important sites with protected plant species, including burnt orchid, greater butterfly-orchid, Turk’s cap lily, and lesser butterfly-orchid. Thus, wide-ranging views and specific protected trees and plants offer two different perspectives on the landscape.
Folk architecture and local history
Folk architecture includes the listed farmhouse No. 85. The municipality has three separate bell towers, one in each of its three districts. The academic landscape painter František Kaván was born in Víchovská Lhota, a district of Víchová nad Jizerou.
Hrádek: a medieval fortification
The medieval fortification of Hrádek is located in V Bučí above the municipal library of Víchová nad Jizerou, in the direction of Danehlova lípa. Ceramic finds date the site to the period from the 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Today, Hrádek is heavily damaged: the inner platform has been partially removed, and the remains of an artificially created moat are still visible. The ceramic dating and the surviving structural remains answer different questions: one places the fortification in time, while the other describes its current condition.
The Víchovský Trail and Kaván’s Landscape Gallery
The Víchovský Trail is marked red, yellow, and blue, is 11 kilometers long, and runs along wide paths; it is also suitable for cyclists. Along the trail is the permanent landscape gallery “Zarostlá místa Kavánových obrazů,” with twelve reproductions of Kaván’s works in wooden frames. This links the trail description to a specific artistic feature along the route. The trail can be divided into two sections, and public transport can be used for this. If you plan this option, check the suitable connection in advance.
Cooling off in hot weather
For hot days, the Jizera at its confluence with the Jizerka in Horní Sytová is also recommended as a place to cool off. This suggestion differs from the Víchovský Trail: it specifically applies to hot weather, whereas the trail’s length, markings, and suitability for cyclists are its main features. You can therefore plan a route-focused activity and a weather-dependent recommendation separately.
