For a stay in Hruba Skala, there are two clearly distinct interests to choose from: the sandstone landscape of Hruboskalsko and the architectural and cultural history of the castle and other cultural sites. The Hruboskalsko Nature Reserve lies within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area and was designated a nature reserve in 1998. Climbers also call Hruboskalsko “Skalák”; historically, it was one of the most frequently used climbing areas in Bohemia.

Sandstone landscape in Hruboskalsko

The rock city of Hruboskalsko has numerous caves, rock tunnels and rock gates, as well as other distinctive small-scale features of the sandstone area. The terms distinguish cavities from tunnel- or gate-like passages; other small-scale features complete the picture. The landscape therefore encompasses more than individual rocks and offers a variety of formations that help describe the distinctive character of the sandstone area.

Ridge trail and viewpoint

The ridge trail through the rock city of Hruboskalsko follows a section of the Golden Trail in Bohemian Paradise. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The Mariánská vyhlídka offers a different perspective: this viewpoint provides a characteristic view of Hrubá Skála Castle and the rock city. Thus, a trail through the rock city and a named viewpoint overlooking the castle and rock city offer two distinct nature-focused experiences.

Castle history and present-day access

Hrubá Skála Castle was built in the mid-14th century by Hynek z Valdštejna and converted into a Renaissance chateau at the end of the 16th century. The dates mark two distinct stages: the construction of the castle and its later conversion into a chateau. Today, the chateau operates as a hotel and is only partially accessible. The courtyard and observation tower are open to visitors. As access arrangements may change, check the current situation before your visit.

Church and rock reliefs

The Church of St. Joseph is located by the bridge in the square in front of Hrubá Skála Castle. It was built in 1812 in a simple Classicist style. This construction date adds another clearly dated architectural chapter, chronologically distinct from the medieval founding of the castle and its later Renaissance conversion.

Another cultural feature is Adamovo lože, also known as Jeskyně milenců. Its rock reliefs depict three Adams: the biblical Adam, the progenitor of the family, and Adam František. However, the reliefs are not very easy to make out today. The three names help distinguish the figures depicted; bear their limited visibility in mind when setting your expectations for the motif.

Nature or culture as your main focus

If you are weighing nature against culture, the differences are clear: the ridge trail leads through the rock city, while the Mariánská vyhlídka looks out over the castle and rock city. The historical landmarks span the 14th-century castle, its Renaissance conversion and the church dating from 1812; the reliefs at Adamovo lože add a distinct visual motif. First decide which side will be the main focus of your stay. This can give your search for a hotel in Hruba Skala a clear direction.
