Žďárek is a good starting point for cycling tours along the Mohelka. The Chapel of St. Cyril and Methodius stands in the village center; nearby, Sychrov adds castle and park architecture to your stay.
Cycling routes and landscape
The topographical details add to the picture of the landscape. The riverbed of the Mohelka stream, at 342 meters above sea level, is the lowest point in Žďárek. Hrobka hill, at 488 meters above sea level, is the highest point. The difference between these elevations is 146 meters. The Mohelka provides a specific point of reference for cycling tours, while Hrobka adds the village’s highest point to the picture.
Chapel and rural architecture
The Chapel of St. Cyril and Methodius, built in 1872, stands in the center of Žďárek. It is a Late Classicist building with Neo-Gothic elements from the late 19th century. A historic house in the village offers a different architectural accent: it is a small, L-shaped rural farmstead with a timber-built residential section. The chapel and the farmstead illustrate different local building types—a religious building and a rural property.
Name, routes and history
The name Žďárek derives from the old expression “žďářit.” It referred to burning or clearing land to make a grain field. The first written references to the village date from 1600. A historic route to Upper Lusatia passed through Žďárek. The Russian army used it during the campaign against Napoleon; the Prussian army also used it in 1866. From 1939 to 1945, the Protectorate border ran through Žďárek. A railway has crossed the cadastral area of Žďárek since 1859; since 1997, the I/35 road, designated for motor vehicles, has also run through the area. The history of Hostinec Zlatá Hvězda as an inn also dates back to the second half of the 19th century.
Sychrov Castle and English Park
Nearby, Sychrov English Park offers several architectural and landscape features. The orangery has an open arcade and a colonnade. A romantic gate closes off the park’s northern axis; it is called Arturův hrad. The “Lesní putování s Kamilem Rohanem” educational trail also runs through the park. Sychrov Castle is open to the public every day year-round, including Mondays, and offers several guided tours. Cultural events, concerts and exhibitions are held there throughout the year. Before your visit, check visitor information, tour options and specific event dates; access conditions may change seasonally, and some programs are available for a limited time. An arcade is a series of arches; in a colonnade, columns structure the space.
