A snow-white church in the center and the ruins of Roimund Castle, with visible traces of fortifications, give Bílý Kostel Nad Nisou two cultural and historical focal points. The Minimuzeum másla a chleba u Hyšků and the mining traces in Panenská Hůrka add further points of interest. Cycling and hiking trails offer another perspective on the village. This lets you decide whether church architecture and the museum or trails and traces in the landscape should be the focus of your stay.
Church, Cemetery Wall and Butter Making
The snow-white Church of St. Nicholas stands in the center of Bílý Kostel Nad Nisou. It was built between 1679 and 1691 and remodeled and extended between 1749 and 1754. The cemetery walls surrounding the church contain niches made of clay, with reliefs of the Stations of the Cross. This brings together the history of the church building and a specific form of religious imagery.
The Minimuzeum másla a chleba u Hyšků was founded in 2003 and contains around 150 exhibits relating to traditional butter making. These include churns, centrifuges, butter molds, butter pots, milk cans and measuring vessels. The collection thus ranges from equipment used in production to related vessels and molds. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.
Roimund Castle and Mining Traces
The ruins of Roimund Castle preserve the remains of the castle’s core, a ditch with a double rampart visible in the terrain, and a sunken cistern. This brings together surviving masonry, traces of fortifications in the landscape and another feature of the castle complex. The ruins can therefore be understood not only through their walls, but also through the visible contours of the terrain.
Panenská Hůrka has several surviving half-timbered buildings and a chapel. In the mining area around Panenská Hůrka, spoil heaps, partly filled-in shafts and prospecting pits are visible. The adits there are important winter roosts for bats; they are filled in or sealed. Thus, visible traces of mining and an important bat-roosting site are found in the same area.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
For cyclists, both the route through the village and its connections to other named routes are relevant: the sv. Zdislavy cycling route passes through Bílý Kostel Nad Nisou and connects with the Odra–Nisa cycling route. International cycling route No. 14, Odra–Nisa, also passes through the village, on the section between Chrastava and Hrádek nad Nisou (Kristýna). The details complement each other: one names the sv. Zdislavy route and its connection, while the other gives the number and section of the international route.
A specific route is also described for walking. A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Bílý Kostel Nad Nisou and continues via Panenská Hůrka to the Minimuzeum másla a chleba and on to Chrastava. Unlike the cycling-route details, this trail describes a sequence of places, including the museum as a destination along the way. This makes it possible to include both culture and hiking in your travel plans.
