A stay in Polubný can bring together three different themes: Baroque church architecture, railway history and winter sports. Each destination has its own connection to the area: the church and ski lift are in Horní Polubný, the cog railway runs between Tanvald and Kořenov, and the cross-country ski trails lead from Kořenov to Jizerka. These distinctions help you keep culture, technological history and winter activities separate when planning.

Church and Getting There

The Baroque Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in Horní Polubný was built between 1789 and 1793. Religious services and cultural events are held there regularly, particularly concerts of classical and sacred music. Historical architecture and a recurring religious and musical programme thus come together in one place. If you are interested in both architectural history and cultural events, you can take both into account when planning your trip.

By bus, travel to the Horní Polubný stop. By train, travel to Kořenov; from there, continue to the church on foot or by car. If you travel by train, this onward journey is part of your plans. Checking the timetables may be helpful for your specific travel date.

Local History and the Cog Railway

In the 19th century, the people of Polubný made their living, among other things, from forestry, spinning, weaving, glassblowing, glass pressing and potash production. The area’s history therefore spans work in the forests and textiles as well as various forms of glassmaking. Unlike the history of a single building, this perspective focuses on the residents’ different occupations.

The Tanvald–Kořenov cog railway is the steepest railway line in the Czech Republic. On the section between Dolní Polubný and Kořenov, the maximum gradient is 58 per mille. The superlative refers to the entire line, while 58 per mille is the maximum figure for this section. In 1992, the line was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The railway thus combines technical features with a specific milestone in its history as a cultural monument.

Ski Lift and Cross-Country Ski Trails

The Jizerský kopec ski lift is in Horní Polubný, on the left-hand side of the road towards Kořenov, about 50 metres above the road. It operates seasonally. Its precisely described location and seasonal operation are two separate planning considerations: you can pinpoint its location, while lift operation should be factored into your seasonal plans.

For cross-country skiing, two groomed trails run from Kořenov to Jizerka. One passes through Horní Polubný; both connect to the Jizerská magistrála. If a connection to Horní Polubný is important to you, this is the trail to choose. Both routes connect to the Jizerská magistrála.

Jizerka can be reached by car only from Horní Polubný. If you plan to drive there, take the access route via Horní Polubný into account when planning your trip.

Planning Your Stay

When looking for a hotel in Polubný, you can start by choosing your focus: church architecture and cultural events, railway history or seasonal winter sports each lead to different destinations. Then tailor your search to the places you actually want to visit, and take the relevant routes into account—for example, the onward journey from Kořenov to the church or the fact that Jizerka can only be reached by car via Horní Polubný.
