Marienbad combines a distinctive spa tradition with mineral springs, architectural history and cultural offerings. The town is one of eleven European spa towns that form part of the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Great Spa Towns of Europe.” When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between architectural history, topics related to the springs and routes through the spa forests.

Spa history at the colonnade

The Hlavní lázeňská kolonáda, also known as the Maxima Gorkého Colonnade, is a landmark of Marienbad and a historic monument of Czech spa culture. Built in 1888–1889, it is a cast-iron structure in the Neo-Baroque style. If you are interested in the spa town’s architecture, this is a specific building that brings its history to life.

The colonnade is step-free and has public toilets, including an accessible toilet. As visitor facilities may change, check the information about the amenities before your visit.

Mineral springs and routes through the spa forests

More than 100 mineral springs rise in the area around Marienbad; there are about 40 within the town itself. These figures refer to different areas: the surrounding area and the town limits. You can explore the mineral springs on the city’s regularly scheduled guided tours. Dates may vary, so check in advance when a tour is taking place.

The Příroda parků educational trail runs mostly along the Úšovický potok. It starts above the Alexandřin pramen, passes the Ferdinandův pramen and ends at the Úšovický potok below the Prelát area. Well-maintained hiking trails also lead from the colonnade through the surrounding spa forests to viewpoints, natural areas and stony paths. This means there is both an educational trail that mainly follows the watercourse and trails with different landscape destinations; they do not form a single continuous route.

Cultural venues and seasonal offerings

The Dům Chopin regularly hosts cultural events, including concerts, lectures, workshops, exhibitions and film screenings. The specific formats on offer change. The Památník Fryderyka Chopina, a museum dedicated to the composer’s stay in Bohemia, is also located in the Dům Chopin on Hlavní třída.

The Zpívající fontána also has a seasonal programme: during the season, it plays music and presents projections with coloured lighting. As operating details may change, check the current schedule before your visit.

Boheminium Park on the eastern edge of Marienbad offers an educational walk featuring scale models of notable Czech architectural and technical monuments at a scale of 1:25. Here, you can compare a model-based view of architectural and technological history with a visit to a historic building such as the colonnade.

For children, the Přírodní park u Prelátova pramene has a fire pit, an obstacle course, climbing frames and other attractions. As the facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.

Park u Lesního pramene has a music pavilion that serves as a café and a venue for musical performances in summer. Here, too, use is seasonal; check the latest information if you want to plan your visit around it.
