Haslau can be explored through cycling and architectural history. Cycling Route 2065 runs through the town on the Vojtanov–Hazlov–Polná connection; the castle-palace complex lies in the heart of the town. This gives you two distinct points of reference when planning your trip: a cycling route with a stated distance and a centrally located cultural monument. Regular bus and train services provide additional practical guidance.
Cycling and route selection
Local Cycling Route 2065 is 9 kilometres long, or 14 kilometres with detours. It is suitable for cross-country and trekking bikes. If you plan to include detours, 14 kilometres is the appropriate distance; without them, you can use the shorter distance as your guide. Route 2064 is suitable for all types of bicycles and follows local paved roads. Traffic is limited except at two intersections in Hazlov. The routes offer different features to consider: for Route 2065, you can take the distance and its recommendation for cross-country or trekking bikes into account; for Route 2064, suitability for all types of bicycles, road surfaces and traffic conditions are important. The “Přírodní a historické zajímavosti Smrčin Františkovy Lázně” cycling tour also passes through Haslau.
Castle-palace complex and church
The castle-palace complex lies in the heart of Haslau. The ruins of a castle that was converted into a palace are designated a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The dominant building in the complex is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Its nave was built in 1687 and 1688 between the Romanesque tower and the western Gothic palace. The nave is the main part of a church interior; its date and position between the tower and palace place its architectural history within specific structural relationships. This brings together two perspectives: the designated ruins of a castle converted into a palace, and the architectural history of the nave. The Romanesque tower and Gothic palace represent different architectural styles.
U Cihelny natural monument
A branch of Cycling Route 2064 near the golfers’ clubhouse leads to the U Cihelny natural monument. The area lies in the valley of the Hazlovský potok and has a rare occurrence of the mineral brown vesuvianite. The mineral deposit is considered unique of its kind in Europe; U Cihelny is protected as a natural monument. For travellers who want to combine cycling with nature and geology, the branch offers a specific point of interest. U Cihelny adds a geological focus to your choice of destination, while the castle-palace complex represents its architectural history.
Practical information
Haslau is connected to public transport by regular bus and train services. If you plan to use either mode of transport for your trip, check the timetable in advance. Regular Catholic services are held in the Roman Catholic church.
