Vlčice combines striking architectural history with cycling routes and a protected stream landscape. This gives you two main focuses for planning your trip: historic buildings and routes past ponds, across meadows and over hills. If you are looking for a hotel in Vlcice, you can first decide whether local history or cycling and landscape are your main interests.

Getting to Vlčice

Vlčice railway station is on line 040 between Chlumec nad Cidlinou and Trutnov. There is a bus stop for scheduled services near the station. Check the current timetables when planning your specific journey.

Ponds and a protected stream landscape

The Luční potok v Podkrkonoší natural monument also extends into the cadastral area of Vlčice u Trutnova. It protects the population and habitat of the stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium); the brook lamprey and common bullhead are also found in the area. These details give the stream landscape a specific natural-history interest.

The ponds in the Peklo recreation and holiday-home area can be reached via field and forest tracks, away from the main road. The local description also mentions an access route to the Nebíčko pond that does not require following the road, provided it did not rain the day before. So, when planning a trip to this spot, take the previous day’s rain into account.

Castles, church and château

The wealthy Zilvár family built Břecštejn Castle in 1455 on a steep conglomerate rock. Only high walls remain of the castle itself. The municipality describes the ruins, formerly called Silberštejn, as its best-known monument in the media. A second castle site, dating from the second half of the 13th century, can now only be identified by traces in the terrain; it was discovered in 1974.

The Church of St. Adalbert also brings together different periods of construction. The registered cultural monument dates from the late 13th century and was originally Early Gothic; the church was remodeled in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The complex includes a Renaissance entrance tower with a rectangular ground plan and two storeys. It stands on the south side of the cemetery wall and contains an entrance gate.

In the cemetery beside the church is an Empire-style tomb belonging to former estate owners. A commemorative plaque on the façade of the church complex recalls J. A. Komenský and his stay in Vlčice in 1627. Vlčice Château adds to these historic buildings with a three-wing, two-storey structure beneath a mansard roof.

Cycling routes and day-trip options

The Komenský Route passes through Vlčice, by ponds, across meadows and over hills with views of the landscape. It is considered suitable for more experienced cyclists. A possible extension is described for the Vlčice cycling loop: it climbs to Hrádeček and then descends by road to Mladé Buky. The planning information therefore differs: suitability is specified for the Komenský Route, while the cycling loop has a specific extension route.

Another day-trip route leads from Hostinné through Čermná and Vlčice to Hrádeček Nature Park. It adds a connection between named places to the descriptions of local routes. You can plan your days around your interests, focusing on cycling, architectural history, or the waterways and protected species.
