Nature trails, pine forests and a distinctive cultural history give Týniště nad Orlicí a diverse character. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different themes and time frames: a town walk links places in the center, a longer route leads through a landscape with its own protected areas, and museums and historic buildings add further highlights.

Nature Trails with Different Themes

The Městská naučná stezka nature trail was created in 2014. It links interesting places in the center of Týniště nad Orlicí and its immediate surroundings. This makes it possible to combine the town’s history with a walk through central areas. Markings on site may change, so check the route before setting out.

The Město v lesích nature trail has 20 stops. At key locations along the route, QR codes link to information on a website. The route is described as an 11-kilometer walk lasting three hours, with an elevation difference of 22 meters. It is also described as suitable for cyclists and strollers, and as following easy, level asphalt terrain. These details provide a specific time and physical framework for planning; check the route and local conditions before setting off.

Forests and Protected Areas

Pine forests surround Týniště nad Orlicí, which is often referred to as “Město v lesích,” or “Town in the Forests.” U Glorietu is a protected forest of pines and oaks. The area overlaps with a European protected area for the hermit beetle. Týnišťská borovice is also part of the local natural heritage: it is a genetically distinct type of Scots pine.

The Týnišťské Poorličí area encompasses the entire site of former game preserves between Třebechovice pod Orebem and Týniště nad Orlicí. Mixed forests, ponds and old oak plantings along dams and paths shape the landscape. The hermit beetle’s presence there is particularly associated with centuries-old hollow oaks. Alongside the forest types, the area’s old trees and their importance to wildlife are also central.

U Houkvice protects rare marsh vegetation on the gravelly-sandy terraces of Podorlicko. The protected area also includes the aquatic vegetation of a system of oligomesotrophic ponds and old oaks. These provide habitat for a particularly large regional number of relict and bioindicator-significant tree-dwelling insect species.

Cultural History and Seasonal Visits

The Vodárenská věž was built between 1925 and 1928, including the municipal water supply system and the installation of clocks. Today, it serves seasonally as a museum and gallery; its interior is arranged for exhibitions and smaller cultural events. Visitor arrangements may vary. From the observation platform, you can see across the surrounding area; on a clear day, mountain peaks are visible on the horizon.

The Kostel sv. Mikuláše church can also be placed in context using several dates: its first written mention dates to 1361. In 1842 and 1843, it was remodeled to take approximately its present form; in 1940, an additional floor was added to its tower. This sequence shows how the building changed over several centuries.

The Jaroslava Dostála Gallery opened on November 13, 2013. Its collection includes more than 200 paintings by local painter Jaroslav Dostál and other regional artists of the 20th century. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; please arrange your visit in advance. The Virtuální muzeum presents the town’s history through loaned objects, photographs, postcards and its own collecting activities. As an online offering, it may continue to develop its content.

The history of the railway is also part of the town’s historical context. In the 19th century, Týniště nad Orlicí became an important railway junction: the connections from Prague to Hanušovice were built in 1874, followed by the line from Choceň to Meziměstí in 1875. These details describe the development at the time.

Swimming as Another Option

Kemp Písák offers natural swimming in the waters of a natural sand lake. If you are planning a day of swimming, bear in mind that public leisure facilities may change seasonally, and check current conditions. This makes it possible to consider swimming as a separate focus alongside the nature trails, forest areas and cultural offerings.
