Geology is present at several specific sites in Skryje: the Joachim Barrande Memorial and the “Po stopě trilobita” (In the Footsteps of a Trilobite) geological experience trail. The Church of the Archangel Michael also shapes the views of the village from the north and east. When planning your stay, you can choose between museum exhibits, trail stops and church architecture; botanical and palaeontological themes broaden the picture.
Memorial and Trilobite Trail
The Joachim Barrande Memorial has been housed in a former school building since 1997. The ethnographic exhibition “Life in Skryje” is on the ground floor. There is also an archaeological exhibition about Professor DurdĂk’s research at nearby Týřov Castle. The topics therefore range from life in Skryje to archaeological research at this neighbouring site.
Children can find their own fossilised trilobite at the memorial. This adds an activity related to geology to the exhibition visit. Exhibitions and hands-on activities may change, so check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The “Po stopě trilobita” geological experience trail begins at the museum and ends at the car park by the church in Skryje. Comic-style information panels, climbing features, viewpoints and viewing holes offer different ways to engage with the subject along the way: information, views and hands-on features. You may also find a fossil in the scree above Skryje Bridge. As trail installations can change, check their condition on site before setting out.
A hiking route also leads from Skryje via the geological experience trail to the Týřov National Nature Reserve. If you plan to include the reserve in your itinerary, take the trail conditions into account. The Skryjský luh nature trail is currently considered to be poorly maintained; check its condition before planning a walk.
Church and Village Views
The Church of the Archangel Michael is a prominent landmark when viewing Skryje from the north and east. The building is longitudinal, single-nave and oriented. Its Baroque architecture features rich articulation, and a prismatic tower stands on the west façade. Those interested in church architecture will find here both a striking feature of the village view and specific architectural details.
Nature and Cycling Route
The JezĂrka area has highly valuable botanical communities with more than 240 vascular plant species. It also includes preserved forest communities whose species composition approaches that of natural forests; they contain more than 25 tree species. JezĂrka also includes significant palaeontological sites from the Cambrian of the Skryje–Týřovice area. Alongside its botanical interest, the area therefore has a distinct palaeontological significance.
For cycling, route 0048 is a specific option for finding your way: it passes through Skryje, heads towards the bridge and then follows the left bank of the Berounka to Roztoky u Křivoklátu. Check the route number and signs before setting off.
