Úhonice offers a clear focal point for a culturally and historically oriented stay: the highly visible Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Chapels, a historic mill and designated heritage areas also shape the town. To the west of the area, extensive woodland and a varied landscape with a valley leading towards the ponds provide additional attractions. You can therefore focus on architectural history, other heritage themes or the landscape.

Church and architectural history

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a highly visible landmark in Úhonice. The present building was constructed between 1896 and 1898 in the neo-Romanesque style, following plans by Eduard Sochor. It replaced an older Gothic church dating from 1615. The two building phases give the town’s history a clear chronological structure: the year 1615 belongs to the predecessor building, while the present church dates from the late 19th century. The different style names also make the transition between the buildings tangible. The façade faces the Franciscan monastery in Hájek; the two are described as a spiritual unity. Those interested in architecture will therefore find not only a striking building here, but also a spiritual connection extending beyond Úhonice.

Parish history and monuments

The parish history goes back further: Úhonice was mentioned in 1143 as a parish village near Unhošť. Since the founding of Strahov Monastery in the same year, the village belonged to the monastery; its abbots founded a parish church there before 1358. This reference predates the Gothic predecessor building of 1615 and opens an earlier chapter of the area’s history. Next to the church stands a Baroque cemetery chapel dating from 1799. The niche chapel of Saint Florian is also designated an immovable cultural monument. The built-up area of Úhonice is designated as a Category UAN I archaeological area, covering the period from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Four notable trees are designated as protected commemorative trees. Together, these different categories show that the monument inventory is not limited to church buildings.

Mill history and landscape

Another point of cultural and historical interest is the Úhonice steam mill with pond at No. 81 on Jenečská and Na Hrázi. It is designated an immovable cultural monument. Václav Klatovský founded the mill around 1907; grain was milled there for forty years. The founding date and duration of milling add the history of a mill and its use to the history of sacred buildings. This gives you a distinction in choosing themes: churches and chapels on the one hand, and an industrial monument on the other.

The western part of the area offers a different landscape focus. There are extensive woodland areas there; west of Úhonice, a varied landscape with pronounced relief also stretches out, particularly a valley leading towards the ponds. Thus, alongside architectural and archaeological themes, woodland, terrain and the valley provide distinct points of interest. If you are planning your stay around your personal interests, you can consider these focuses separately rather than infer a fixed sequence from the various sights.

Getting there by bus

Regular bus line 307 connects Úhonice with Praha-Zličín, including metro station B, and with Unhošť. If you are planning to use this connection, check the current timetable before travelling. The connections mentioned may be relevant to planning your journey; choosing between local history and the landscape remains a matter of personal interest.
