In Katusice, the history of churches and monuments meets views across the Podbezdězí landscape. The parish church, a rural farmstead and an archaeological site represent different cultural themes; at the same time, Katusice offers views of several named destinations. When planning your trip, you can choose between historical highlights and scenic views.

Churches and Monuments

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary already stood in Katusice in 1352. Its present form dates from 1853, when the church was rebuilt following a fire. The dates mark different periods: 1352 indicates the church’s early presence in the village, while 1853 marks the reconstruction that shaped its present form. Those interested in architectural history can trace the difference between the early church and its later form. This long timespan makes the church a reference point for different chapters in the village’s history.

A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1727, stands in the park on the village green. Rural farmstead No. 12 has been a protected cultural monument since 1995 and is also the birthplace of Jan Nepomuk Krouský. The two places have different points of interest: the statue is defined by the saint’s figure and the year it was created, while the farmstead brings together its protected status and biographical connection. Together, a dated statue and a protected farmstead represent different forms of cultural heritage.

The Cihelna Krouského archaeological site broadens the perspective to another subject: it comprises a cemetery and a settlement from the La Tène period. Unlike the church, statue or farmstead, it is not a single building but a site complex with two components. The cemetery and settlement together form the archaeological point of interest and complement the history of buildings and monuments with a distinct subject of their own.

Landscape and Views

Katusice lies in the Podbezdězí landscape. From there, you can see Bezděz Castle and Vrátenská Hora; in clear weather, the view extends as far as Ještěd. The landscape is therefore linked to specific named destinations. Clear weather is explicitly required for a view as far as Ještěd, which you can bear in mind when setting your expectations for this long-distance view. These named destinations give the landscape a distinct focus alongside the historical themes.

Tour de Katusice: A Look Back

Tour de Katusice also provides a specific, time-bound reference to cycling. In 2022, the adults’ route was 55 km long; the tour started in front of the Katusice Cultural Centre on 4 June 2022. The route, date and starting point relate to that edition. The start in front of the Cultural Centre gives the event a specific connection to the place, while the route length indicates the scale of the adults’ route. The tour details thus offer a dated look back at 2022 and a different connection to Katusice than its enduring historical and landscape themes.
