Dobrovice’s sugar-making tradition, town history and clearly defined routes shape the options for visitors. Other highlights include a church complex east of the main square, seasonal tours of the industrial distillery, and routes that start and finish in the town. When planning, the most important things to consider are the conditions of each offer and the different route lengths.
Sugar-Making Tradition and Museums
The area around Dobrovice is known as the birthplace of sugar beet cultivation in the Czech Republic. Sugar has been produced continuously in Dobrovice itself since 1831. The Dobrovická muzea are dedicated to sugar production, spirit distilling, sugar beet cultivation and the history of Dobrovice. A guided tour covers exhibitions on sugar production, spirit distilling and sugar beet cultivation. Visitors who want to focus on the sugar-making tradition can see the tour as bringing together cultivation, production and distilling; the town’s history is also a separate subject at the museum complex.
During the molasses campaign, visitors aged six and over can tour the Tereos TTD, a.s. industrial distillery in Dobrovice. This is a seasonal offer, and availability and booking arrangements may change. Check both in advance for your planned travel dates.
Historic Sites and Views
The Church of St Bartholomew stands as an architectural counterpoint to the industrial themes of the museums. East of the main square, it forms a coherent complex with the former cemetery and its enclosure. The location and the connection between these three elements make this a cultural highlight in its own right within Dobrovice.
Another landmark is the observation tower at Dobrovice Town Hall. It is open every weekday during the information centre’s opening hours; groups can also visit on weekends by prior arrangement. On weekdays, visits are therefore subject to the information centre’s opening hours, while weekend visits for groups require an advance arrangement. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
Outdoor Pool and Water Quality
The date of the water-quality assessment is important when planning a swim: on 17 August 2026, the water at the Dobrovice outdoor pool was assessed as suitable for swimming. Check the current status before planning a swimming day, as this assessment applies to that date.
Compare Excursions by Length and Type
The circular route “Dobrovice – Vinařice – Chloumek – Boží Voda – Bojetice – Dobrovice” is 11 km long and starts and finishes in Dobrovice. It is considered moderately difficult and runs mainly along paved paths. The route “Z Dobrovice do Jabkenické obory a zpět” is an 18 km excursion, also starting and finishing in Dobrovice. The two routes differ in length by seven kilometres; the shorter loop also has information on its difficulty and path surface.
The “Svatojiřským lesem” cycling route has a different focus: it is an easy excursion and suitable for all types of bicycles. The options can therefore be compared using different criteria—the length and path surface of the 11 km loop, or the easy nature of this cycling route and its suitability for all types of bicycles. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting off.
