On the village square in Vodslivy, beside the monument to those who fell in the First World War, stands a column bell made of red Permian sandstone. This juxtaposition brings a specific structure together with a historic memorial site. Vodslivy was first mentioned in writing in 1436, offering another perspective on the village from a different period.

History and Reconstruction

During the Thirty Years’ War, Swedish troops burned Vodslivy to the ground; the buildings had to be rebuilt around 1700. The early written mention in 1436 and the reconstruction around 1700 represent clearly distinct historical milestones: the first refers to the written mention of the village, while the later period concerns the buildings after their destruction. The reconstruction is dated approximately, whereas the first mention is associated with a specific year. This distinction helps place the village’s history in context: the early mention is not the same as a statement about when the buildings were restored after their destruction.

The Former School

Another chapter concerns the school. A school was founded in Vodslivy in 1768, probably as a result of an order dating from the reign of Maria Theresa. The new school building was completed on 10 October 1863; the school closed in 1947. These three dates refer to different events: the founding, the completion of the new building and the closure of the school. The sequence thus spans the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Compared with the destruction and reconstruction during the Thirty Years’ War, the focus shifts to a later period in Vodslivy’s history.

Village Square and Watercourse

On the village square, the column bell can be distinguished from the monument to those who fell in the First World War. Its column shape and red Permian sandstone identify the bell; the monument commemorates those who fell. They stand side by side but refer to different aspects: architectural form and material on the one hand, remembrance on the other. Vodslivský potok adds a landscape feature to this picture, flowing through the village. The square is the specific location of the bell and monument, while the stream describes a course through Vodslivy. This adds a different spatial connection to the architectural details.

Walking Routes in the Surrounding Area

The area around Vodslivy is crisscrossed by numerous tourist routes. Alongside the village’s history, square and watercourse, this provides a separate topic for planning your trip: the routes in the surrounding area. They take you beyond the individual sights of the village to explore its surroundings. If you are planning a hike, check the trail markings and current conditions before setting out. This lets you adapt your plans to the route in question. History and walking routes serve different interests: the historical dates provide context for events and the school’s history, while the tourist routes offer another way to spend time in the surrounding area.
