Fields, forests, meadows, and smaller ponds alternate across the hilly landscape of Central Bohemia; Velký Blaník rises above Louňovice pod Blaníkem. This makes the town a clear starting point for a trip that brings together scenery, architectural history, and trails. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether to focus on the town, the mountain, or both.

Landscape between Blaník and the Blanice

The Blanice flows through Louňovice pod Blaníkem and meanders picturesquely through the surrounding area. A wooden observation tower with 107 steps stands on Velký Blaník. From there, the view stretches across Podblanicko and includes Louňovice pod Blaníkem. If you plan to visit the tower, check its opening arrangements separately. The Blanice also offers a special opportunity: with a little luck, you can wash out small flakes of natural gold.

Church, castle, and cultural events

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the surviving part of the former monastery of Louňovice. It was originally Gothic and was remodelled in the Baroque period. Louňovice Castle developed from a Renaissance fortress built on the site of the former monastery provost’s residence; it was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1675. The castle is used for museums, exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events. If you are planning a visit, check access arrangements for specific events.

The castle also hosts the annual Podblanický hudební podzim music festival. The Jan Dismas Zelenka concert hall is the venue, and the festival also includes works by Zelenka. The Svatováclavské slavnosti take place in late September: they begin with a mass on Velký Blaník and continue with a procession in medieval clothing to the castle. If an event date is important to your trip, check that year’s programme.

The Nejstarší dějiny Louňovic pod Blaníkem Museum is temporarily closed at present. Check its status again before your trip. The beekeeping museum in Louňovice pod Blaníkem is devoted to the history of beekeeping beneath Blaník and displays historic beehives. From spring to September, an observation hive with a living colony of bees complements the exhibition.

Distinguishing between nature trails and the cycling route

The starting point of the Blaník nature trail is about one kilometre on foot from the town square. Another separate trail option is S rytířem na Blaník: it leads from Dům přírody in Kondrac, via the Velký Blaník observation tower complex, to a car park above Louňovice pod Blaníkem, and is not a loop. In either direction, it offers about two kilometres of trail with 17 playful stations about Blaník, the knights of Blaník, and the nature of the Blaník Protected Landscape Area. Individual stations may change.

For cyclists, the 32-kilometre Po stopách blanických rytířů route passes through Veliš, Louňovice pod Blaníkem, Velký Blaník, and Načeradec. It is therefore quite different from the nature trail: the options range from about two kilometres each way with stations to a longer cycling route passing a series of named places. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Getting there and planning accommodation

Louňovice pod Blaníkem is accessible by bus from Benešov, Vlašim, Votice, and Tábor. Check the timetables for your travel dates, as they may change. For planning, you can consider the short nature-trail sections, the observation tower, cultural events, and the longer cycling route as different options.
