In Libež, cultural history, nature conservation and cycling can be explored through specific points of interest. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity tells the story of several construction phases; the preserved structure of the settlement’s core is part of its cultural heritage. The Les u Libeže Natural Monument has its own botanical focus, while Cycle Route 101 provides information about its route, surfaces and difficulty. You can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in architectural history, plant conservation or a cycling route.

The Chapel and the History of the Settlement

The chapel’s history distinguishes between the original building and the later new chapel: in 1712, miller Pavel Pěnkava built and furnished the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Except for the bell tower, it was originally made of wood. In 1839, it was converted into a stone chapel. A new Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built on the same site in 2006; it was consecrated on 22 October of that year. This means that the construction, conversion and new chapel represent three historical stages spanning almost three centuries.

The central part of the settlement of Libež, on the left bank of the Blanice, is also significant in terms of cultural history: its preserved urban structure is considered part of the settlement’s cultural heritage. This broadens the focus from a single building to the spatial structure of the central part of the settlement. Another historical reference is the Libežský mlýn. In 1654, it was associated with a mill with two wheels and a sawmill.

Nature Conservation and Cycling

The Les u Libeže Natural Monument protects a population of the bristly bellflower (Campanula cervicaria), as well as other specially protected plant species. This makes plant conservation a distinct natural feature of Libež, complementing its architectural and settlement history.

Cycle Route 101 offers several points to consider when planning your ride. It runs from Louňovice pod Blaníkem via Kondrac, Vlašim, Libež and Čejkovice to Český Šternberk; Libež is at kilometre 9 of Cycle Route 101. Along the way, the route uses third-class roads and local roads and passes over asphalt, as well as paved and unpaved surfaces. It is rated easy, with some moderately difficult sections. As the rating may vary depending on current conditions, it is a good idea to check route conditions before setting off. Mountain bikes and trekking bikes are considered suitable. When deciding, you can therefore take the type of bike into account along with the road type and changing surfaces, rather than relying solely on the overall “easy” rating.

The East Bohemian Way reaches Libež along the Blanice River. Together with Cycle Route 101, this offers a second cycling option, but with a different planning focus: for Route 101, the information about its course, surface and difficulty is useful; for the East Bohemian Way, the route along the river is the key point of reference. When choosing between these cycling options, you can consider whether the information about Route 101 or the river setting of the East Bohemian Way is more important for your plans.
