The Church of St James the Greater, the Na Valech fortified site and a landscape viewpoint near Kácova Lhota give a stay in Kozmice three distinct points of interest. The church is a local landmark; significant earthwork remains of a medieval fortified structure lie on the edge of the village centre. The viewpoint is on the southern edge of Kácova Lhota, a district of the municipality of Kozmice. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh local history, landforms and scenery as separate interests when planning your stay.

The Church and the Listed Ensemble

The Church of St James the Greater is first mentioned in the second half of the 14th century; its bell tower, the section that houses the bells, dates from the middle of the same century. The church is listed as a cultural monument under reference number 15702/2-76. The protected ensemble includes the church, the boundary wall, the rectory at No. 31 and the associated plots. The listed ensemble therefore extends beyond the church building. The site of the Church of St James in Kozmice is also registered as an archaeological site in category ÚAN I; the registration was updated on 9 June 2023.

Medieval Earthwork Traces

The Na Valech fortified site lies on the edge of the village centre of Kozmice and preserves significant earthwork remains of a medieval fortified structure, a seat of the rural minor nobility dating from the 13th to the 15th century. The site is surrounded by a ditch and partly by a rampart; no visible masonry remains. The history of this place can therefore be understood primarily through its landforms and surviving fortifications. Compared with the church, the fortified site represents a different form of historical heritage: earthworks rather than a church building and a protected ensemble. This makes the two places different points of reference when exploring Kozmice’s medieval history.

Landscape and Practical Information

Kácova Lhota is a district of the municipality of Kozmice. A viewpoint overlooking the landscape can be found on the southern edge of the village. If you are looking for a landscape view as well as cultural history, you can make Kácova Lhota a separate focus of your plans. Kozmice also has a multipurpose sports area with a children’s playground established in 2018 and a pavilion. Before visiting, check locally what facilities are available to visitors.
