Poli Crysochous brings together local history and coastal attractions to help you plan your trip. In the central town centre, restored stone buildings line a pedestrian zone, while churches add a cultural dimension. Along the coast, paths between the beaches and to the harbour take centre stage. Nature trails and the Baths of Aphrodite, by contrast, are in the wider area around Polis. This makes it possible to consider the town centre, coastal attractions and regional excursions as distinct elements of your stay.
Pedestrian Zone and Church History
The central town centre of Polis Chrysochous has been transformed into a picturesque pedestrian zone, with restored stone buildings. This town centre offers a cultural counterpoint to the coastal paths: here, the focus is on the built environment and the history of the churches. If you would like to include the town itself in your trip planning as well as coastal activities, the town centre is a destination in its own right.
The Church of Agios Andronikos illustrates the changing use of a specific religious building. From 1571, the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque, and the frescoes were covered over. After 1974, the Department of Antiquities uncovered and restored the wall paintings. This sequence links the historical conversion with the later uncovering and restoration of the frescoes.
Another church-related point of interest is the small Church of Agios Nikolaos in the pedestrian zone of Polis. It is also used for Catholic Masses. Thus, alongside its architectural history, the town centre offers insights into the religious use of its churches.
Coast, Beaches and Paths
The campsite at Polis Chrysochous is located in a fragrant eucalyptus forest bordering a pebble beach. The forest setting and pebble beach give this stretch of coast a different character from the historic town centre. If the beach’s condition is important to your choice, check the latest information: beach conditions can change.
The coastal footpath at Polis connects the two developed beaches, Δημοτική Ακτή and Ακτή στον κατασκηνωτικό χώρο. The municipality has installed a wheelchair charging station on the coastal footpath between these municipal beaches. If you plan to make use of this facility, we recommend checking that it is currently operational before your visit. A coastal path starts at the campsite and beach at Polis Chrysochous and leads to the harbour of Latchi. The paths therefore include both two beach endpoints and the harbour as a coastal path destination.
Nature in the Wider Area
For those wishing to explore nature beyond the town, the wider area around Polis offers various nature trails. Rare endemic plants grow there, and local wildlife and migratory birds can also be observed. Sights in the wider area also include the Baths of Aphrodite, a freshwater grotto in the shade of a wild fig tree. The nature trails and grotto offer different ways to explore the area: observing plants and animals along the trails, on the one hand, and visiting a named attraction with its distinctive grotto, on the other.
