The Vouni Panagias–Ambelitis Wine Route passes through Letymvou, giving wine a tangible connection to the village. At the same time, its churches offer very different architectural and historical features: a mosaic iconostasis, a cross-shaped domed church and fresco fragments from two centuries. During a stay, you can explore wine and sacred architecture as separate interests.

Churches with Distinctive Features

The Church of Agios Theodoros has a mosaic iconostasis with three doors; it has no wall paintings. An iconostasis is a partition in a church decorated with icons.

Agios Kirykos and Agia Ioulitti is a cross-shaped domed church dating from the 12th century. It preserves fresco fragments from the 12th and 15th centuries. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s history from the age of its paintings: the 12th century dates the church, while the surviving fresco fragments span two different centuries. The cross-shaped plan describes the church’s layout; the dome is another feature of its form.

Agios Theodoros and Agios Kirykos and Agia Ioulitti offer different points of interest: the former has the mosaic iconostasis and no wall paintings, while the latter features a dome, a cross-shaped plan and fresco fragments. If you are interested in church art, you can distinguish between a specific element of the interior and a building form with historic paintings.

The Church of Panagia Theotokos and the Chapel of Agios Epiphanios are other sacred sites in Letymvou. The Chapel of Panagia Photolampousa, by contrast, lies on a mountainside about one kilometre north of the village and dates from approximately the 18th century. It adds another nearby site to the selection: unlike the churches mentioned in the village, it is outside Letymvou.

Wine Route and a Visit to Makarounas Vineyards

Makarounas Vineyards, a family-run estate in the countryside around Letymvou, is part of the wine experience. Wine tastings are offered there, along with a communal lunch made with homemade dishes from local ingredients, available seasonally. Plan your visit for Saturday between 11 am and 5 pm; reservations are recommended. As the current visitor offering may change, check before travelling.

Three distinct points of reference are important for understanding the area: the Wine Route passes through the village, the chapel is about one kilometre to the north, and Makarounas Vineyards is in the countryside. The route, chapel and estate each offer a different focus for a stay.

For those interested in churches, the main points of interest in Letymvou are its different architectural styles, frescoes and the locations of its sacred sites. If you would also like to visit the winery, you can go to Makarounas Vineyards on Saturdays between 11 am and 5 pm; reservations are recommended.
