Byzantine murals, icons and coins give Pedhoulas a distinctive cultural profile; nature trails offer another focus for travel planning. The village is located in the Troodos Mountains, in the Marathasa Valley of the Lefkosia (Nicosia) district, at an altitude of 1,100 metres. If you choose a destination based on specific cultural and nature themes, you will find a range of points of interest here rather than just a single excursion destination.

Church Art and Collections

The Archangelos Michael Church in Pedoulas is painted on two levels in the local post-Byzantine style, dating from before Venetian rule. Eleven compositions from the feast cycle are positioned above depictions of saints. This arrangement gives the paintings a clear structure: the feast cycle and the depictions of saints can be viewed as distinct parts of the church’s decoration.

The Byzantine Museum of Pedoulas displays the 13th-century Panagia Hodegetria, the 14th-century Panagia Eleousa, and an icon of Saint George slaying the dragon, with scenes from his life. The coin collection includes, among other items, a gros of the Cypriot King Hugh IV (1324–1359) and a Byzantine coin from 1570. The collection thus brings together religious images and coins from different periods.

Another cultural landmark is the bronze statue of Ethnarch and Archbishop Makarios III. It stands on Filoxenias Street, on Pedoulas’s main road. The Chapel of Saint Paraskevi is located at Pumi, in the old village of Pedoulas, in a valley with orchards.

Nature Trails and Observation Sites

Pedoulas has nature trails for hiking. The routes associated with the village lead to historic Byzantine chapels, old stone fountains and places of natural beauty. For specific route choices, check the details and conditions of each trail separately.

The “Stavros tis Fithkias” Telescope and Nature Observatory is located next to the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Pedoulas. If you plan to visit, check access arrangements beforehand. This keeps the nature trails and the named observation facility as two distinct options during your stay.

Environmental Education with Specific Visiting Conditions

The Stelios Environmental Education Center offers indoor and outdoor environmental education under the guidance of experienced teachers and course leaders. The center is visited by primary and secondary school pupils, as well as university students from Cyprus and abroad. If you are considering taking part, discuss the available options with the center.

The EEC Pedoulas is open during the school year but is closed on weekends, public holidays, and during the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays. These conditions are important for planning; confirm arrangements directly with the center before visiting.

Orchards and Getting Your Bearings in the Village

Pedhoulas is surrounded by orchards and is especially known for its cherries and products made from them. Many visitors drink refreshing water from the village’s natural spring as they pass through Pedoulas. Both add a connection to the village’s produce and local features to its cultural themes.

Four interactive tourist information panels help visitors find their way: one stands next to the Community Council offices, while others are located at the entrances to the Folklore Museum and the Byzantine Museum, and at the Stelios Foundation office. Together with the clearly identified cultural and nature themes, these landmarks help visitors identify different areas of interest for their stay.
