At the foot of the Machairas Forest lies the small mountain village of Gourri in the Pitsilia region. Paved streets and traditional folk architecture give the village a distinctive built character, alongside insights into village history, crafts, local food and nature. If you are considering Gourri as a destination for a stay, you can focus on historic buildings and everyday culture, traditional production, or a nature trail with a named start and end point.
Church and everyday history
Several periods come together at the Church of Agios Georgios: the stone church was built on the site of an older church dating to around 1500. An inscription inside the church gives 24 May 1898 as the date of its dedication; parts of the iconostasis date from 1906. These details relate to the predecessor building, the dedication and the furnishings, and thus tell different chapters of the village’s history.
The Folk Art Museum in Gourri opened in 2015 and displays furniture, tools, household objects and rooms from a traditional Cypriot house. The collection illustrates the former way of life of the villagers. By contrast, the Bike Museum focuses on bicycles from 1925 to 1960. If you are particularly interested in everyday history, the two museums offer different approaches: a traditional house with household objects on the one hand, and bicycles from a clearly defined period on the other.
Crafts and local products
Crafts in Gourri can also be explored from different perspectives. At the textile workshop, fabrics are woven on traditional looms from traditional raw materials. The “Melissionas Makkrianastasi” apiary is next to the village square and explains how beekeeping in the village has evolved from traditional methods to the use of modern machinery. It also covers bees and their contribution. Local crafts therefore range from processing traditional raw materials to changes in beekeeping. If you would like to include the apiary as a firm part of your itinerary, check current visiting options in advance.
Locally made sweets and preserves are part of the traditional food culture. Visitors can buy, among other things, homemade jams and “glyka tou koutaliou”: fruit and vegetables preserved in syrup. These products are made by local women; the current selection may vary. If you are looking for specific items, ask about the selection locally. For travellers who want to include local food culture, buying these products offers a direct connection to the local producers.
Nature trail and spring
The Palia Vrysi nature trail begins in Gourri at the traditional old spring and ends at Mavritsio Waterfall. The spring dates from 1916 and stands at the starting point beside the river, linking a local landmark with a recorded date to the start of the nature trail. The route follows the river, crosses wooden bridges and offers views of the region’s plant life.
