Kato Drys brings together a regional wine route, textile crafts, several museums and church feast days. There are also demonstrations and seasonal activities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these themes by their character: the museums showcase crafts and everyday culture, feast days have specific calendar dates, and picking activities are seasonal. This makes it possible to choose the focus of a stay without combining the different themes into a single tour.
Wine Route and Local Focus
The village is part of Cyprus’s seventh wine route. It covers the mountainous areas of Larnaca and Lefkosia (Nicosia), placing Kato Drys within a regional context. Alongside this route, there are local cultural themes: Lefkara lace, the collections of the two museums and church feast days. Those primarily interested in the wine route can combine the regional perspective with the cultural themes in the village. Conversely, Kato Drys can be viewed through its crafts and everyday culture, with the wine route serving as a complementary, broader point of reference.
Lace, Collections and Demonstrations
The Bee & Embroidery Museum displays traditional lace and embroidery (Lefkaritika) dating back to 1880. Lefkara lace is also made as a craft in Kato Drys. The textile theme is therefore represented both in the museum collection and in local craft practice. The museum offers guided tours; seasonal activities include picking olives, almonds and grapes, although the activities on offer may vary. If you are planning a guided tour or picking activity, check the specific dates in advance.
The Local Rural Museum offers a different perspective: it presents a traditional rural household with period furniture, furnishings and tools for work and domestic life. While textile work is the focus of the Bee & Embroidery Museum, this museum focuses on living and working. The two collections highlight different aspects of Kato Drys culture: textile crafts in one, and objects from a rural household in the other.
To Madratzi tis Giagias focuses on demonstrations and workshops featuring handmade local products. Examples include almond sweets, terebinth berry pies and jams. Here, demonstrations and workshops are the main focus, while the museums display collections. If you would like to include this activity in your trip plans, check the dates in advance.
Churches and Feast Days
Two very old icons of the Virgin Mary are located on the iconostasis of the Panagia Eleousa Church in Kato Drys. The Dormition of the Virgin Mary is celebrated there on 15 August. On 10 February, the holy icon of Agios Charalambos is carried in a procession; a village festival is held in front of Agios Charalambos Church on the same date. The feast days have specific calendar dates, while the icons of the Virgin Mary are a distinctive feature of the church.
The Feggaros Music Festival takes place annually in July in Kato Drys. Its timing therefore differs from both the church feast days and the seasonal picking activities. Check the latest festival details before travelling.
Places and Routes Nearby
There are also other points of interest nearby. The well-known Agios Minas Monastery is close to Kato Drys. A nature trail also runs in the surrounding area: after the Metamorphosis Soteros Chapel, the path splits and descends towards Kato Drys. The monastery and the trail offer different points of interest in the area; the trail’s course is defined by the fork and the direction downhill towards Kato Drys.
