Kalavasos lies on the western bank of the Vasilikos. The history of the village connects copper mining across several eras with the church of Panagia Titiotissa and its icon art. The Neolithic settlement of Tenta is also nearby. Those interested in cultural history will find different perspectives here: from prehistoric settlement to the mines of the 20th century.

Copper mining in different eras

Mavri Sykia was an important copper-mining site in both antiquity and modern times. Modern mining began in 1937 at the Mavridia mine in the Kalavasos area. These details highlight different aspects: Mavri Sykia connects two historical eras, while Mavridia marks the dated beginning of modern mining in the area.

The Lantaria mine is recorded as having operated from 1961 to 1964 and produced 65,000 tonnes of copper-bearing ore. It was the smallest of the Kalavasos mines. The Petra mine operated from 1953 to 1966; during that time, 290,000 tonnes were extracted from one of the region’s largest deposits. The two mines are thus compared on different scales: Lantaria is ranked by size among the Kalavasos mines, while Petra is described in terms of the size of its deposit on a regional scale. The operating dates and production figures also offer concrete points of reference for anyone interested in the economic history of the village.

Panagia Titiotissa and its icons

The church of Panagia Titiotissa features Byzantine architecture and a cross-in-square floor plan. Inside, it has a carved wooden iconostasis with old icons. Miniatures depict the twelve apostles and other saints. The architecture and artworks offer different ways to appreciate the church: the design of the building on the one hand, and its religious imagery on the other.

Among its notable artworks is an important double-sided icon from the 16th century. The Virgin Mary is depicted on the front, and the Crucifixion on the back. Panagia Titiotissa’s feast day is 8 September. Those focusing on sacred art can thus consider the architectural features, the iconostasis and a single dated work as different aspects of the same place.

Tenta and the cycling route

The Neolithic settlement of Tenta lies near Kalavasos. It dates to 7000 BC and is covered by a distinctive conical roof. Tenta offers a much earlier historical perspective than the mines of the 20th century. This difference in dates can help you prioritise the sites according to your interests: Tenta represents the Neolithic past, while the mines illustrate the history of copper extraction across different eras.

A cycling route also passes through Kalavasos: the Ancient Vasilikos Extended. Check current route conditions before setting out. The route offers a different focus from the historical themes and may be useful for planning if you would like to include a bike ride in your time in Kalavasos.
