At Parque José Martí, two important strands of Cienfuegos’s history come together: public space and the historic urban layout. The square was formerly called Plaza de Armas. Historically, public functions were concentrated here; the church, as well as public and government buildings, were located at this site. The character of the historic centre is shaped not only by individual buildings but also by how they are arranged around squares and avenues.

The city’s history in its layout

The historic centre has largely preserved its urban structure and grid plan from the early 19th century. The grid plan shapes the spatial layout of squares and wide avenues. The original design comprised 25 blocks; when the city expanded beyond the original plan, the grid was retained and extended. Comparing the different scales offers insight into the city’s history: the grid plan describes the structure of the centre, while individual buildings reveal specific historic uses.

Architectural highlights include the triumphal arch, considered the only arch of its kind in Cuba. City workers built it through voluntary labour. Another building, constructed in 1893, served associations of Spanish immigrants and their descendants. Its purpose was to promote the traditions of the Spanish regions represented among the Casino’s members. Both examples broaden the perspective on Cienfuegos: the triumphal arch represents collective effort, while the building reflects the preservation of regional traditions through associations.

Mountains, lagoon and waterfalls

The province’s natural environment also features contrasting landscapes. The Guamuhaya Mountains in Cienfuegos are known for their local flora and fauna, waterfalls and coffee plantations. Guanaroca Lagoon is considered a protected area with mangroves and rich flora and fauna, including flamingos and tocororos. Mountains and cultivated land thus contrast with a protected lagoon—a pair of distinct natural landscapes in the province.

At the El Nicho waterfalls in the municipality of Cumanayagua, a tour of about one kilometre follows challenging paths and rural bridges and passes waterfalls. The distance is short, but on its own it says nothing about the level of difficulty. The approximate length describes the scope of the tour, while the challenging paths describe its character.

Bay and coral reef

There are different ways to experience the water, too. Cienfuegos Bay, also known as Jagua Bay, is considered a place for water sports and boat trips, as well as one of the province’s main attractions; it is also one of the country’s most important ports. A boat trip across its calm waters offers a different perspective on the city. The bay’s importance as a port and the view of the city from the water are two distinct aspects. At Rancho Luna Beach, activities include swimming and diving at the coral reef. If you are planning a visit to El Nicho or a boat trip around the bay, check current access and tour options in advance.
