Camaguey offers several very different starting points for a trip. The historic centre of the city of CamagĂĽey has a distinctive urban layout; it is also known for its festival culture, traditional casabe production and landscapes with unusual geological formations. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether you are more interested in urban history, festival culture or nature.

Cityscape, Film and Festival Culture

The 54-hectare historic centre of Camagüey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an exceptional example of a traditional urban layout that was relatively isolated from the main trade routes. Large and small squares, winding streets, lanes and irregular city blocks shape the cityscape. What is interesting is not just one particular square but the overall form: the various urban elements make Camagüey’s centre legible as a cohesive layout.

A themed route in CamagĂĽey has a narrower focus: it runs from Plaza de la Soledad along Calle Ignacio Agramonte, also known as Calle de los Cines. The walk is about 250 metres long and is dedicated to film. Its scale differs from that of the historic centre as a whole: it explores a brief, clearly defined cultural theme.

Festival culture and regional cuisine are also connected. The San Juan Camagüeyano is one of Camagüey’s cultural events, celebrated as a carnival. Casabe is traditionally made in the rural community of Vilató in the Sierra de Cubitas and is part of the festival’s offerings. If you are planning your trip around the San Juan Camagüeyano, check the current event dates and casabe offerings in advance.

River Landscapes, Fossils and Trails

The Cangilones del Río Máximo showcase a landscape where water and limestone meet: for about 300 metres, the current flows over smooth limestone slabs. At the Najasa Fossil Forest, by contrast, the focus is on geological history. Its fossils consist of tree remains that turned to stone more than three million years ago and cover an area of one hectare. These offer two contrasting landscape themes: rock slabs shaped by the river and evidence of petrified wood from the distant past.

In the Limones-Tuabaquey protected area, the cave paintings of Pichardo are among its notable cultural treasures; they are considered the best-preserved in the Caribbean. Ranch La Belén in the Sierra del Chorrillo protected area has horse-riding trails along the Santa Gertrudis Path. There are also trails for birdwatching. The ranch therefore offers two distinct activities: horse riding and birdwatching.

On Ballenato del Medio, a trail crosses the island to its highest point. There is a viewpoint there overlooking the Bay of Nuevitas. Before visiting Ballenato del Medio or Ranch La Belén, it is advisable to check the latest access conditions.
