Zemunik Gornji is best understood through specific religious and cultural landmarks: Archbishop Ivan Prenđa was born here, and the branch church of Sv. Josipa radnika is another historical landmark. A Hajduk mural reported on in 2026 adds a more recent cultural note.
Church, Places of Remembrance and Local History
A statue of Archbishop Ivan Prenđa stands in the square at the start of the road to the parish church of Sv. Josipa radnika. Prenđa was born in Zemunik Gornji; the statue connects his biography with a precisely identified place in the village. Together with the church, it gives local history a tangible religious connection.
The branch church of Sv. Josipa radnika belongs to the parish of Kraljica mira – Kraljica Hrvata and was consecrated on April 27. Its patron is Saint Joseph the Worker. A church initially dedicated to Saint George became the parish church of the medieval villages of Podberjane and Starovšane in the 13th century. These places correspond to present-day Gornji Zemunik. The local church history thus brings together a present-day parish connection and older place names. A church announcement from 2026 also reports that investments were made in the restoration of the church of Sv. Josipa radnika in the preceding years.
A report from July 2026 introduced a new mural dedicated to Hajduk in the part of Zemunik Gornji cut through by the Kalmetina. It is titled “Srce sam tebi dao i nije mi žao” and was created by local Hajduk supporters. Residents and fans gathered for its unveiling. The title and dedication give the mural its own connection to local fan culture, alongside the older religious places of remembrance.
Sports and municipal projects are also associated with specific dates. In 2011, Zemunik Gornji hosted the sixth “Roland Vrsaljko” memorial five-a-side football tournament; that edition lasted ten days. Funding was secured for equipment for a children’s playground at the Športsko rekreacijski centar Zemunik Gornji. The accompanying project document is dated April 2025.
