From Ražovljeva glavica, the view stretches across the Ravni Kotari plain, olive groves and wind turbines on the horizon. At 164.6 metres above sea level, this rise is the highest point in the Municipality of Škabrnja. Landscape and local history meet here: Ražovljeva glavica lies east of Škabrnja and was the settlement’s most important defensive position.
Churches from Different Centuries
The Church of St. Luke dates from the 13th century. Its pointed Gothic vault was built in the 15th century; the church has been fully restored. The Church of St. Mary is another notable building: it was built in the 11th century as a central structure with six apses, and has been restored and conserved. Its architecture therefore takes visitors back to a much earlier period than the Gothic vault of St. Luke’s.
The parish of the Assumption of Mary, established in 1686, is also part of the area’s church history. The new parish church of the Assumption of Mary was consecrated on 8 August 2004. Škabrnja thus brings together different historical periods, from medieval architecture to a 21st-century church building.
Memorial Sites in Škabrnja
The Central Cross and memorial site commemorate Croatian soldiers and civilians who were killed or fell in Škabrnja. The mass grave of Škabrnja was discovered on 6 June 1996; 27 people were exhumed, including one defender and 26 civilians. The “Ranjena golubica” (“Wounded Dove”) monument was erected in November 1999 and is dedicated to 27 Croatian defenders and civilians.
The Škabrnja Memorial Centre spans two floors. The ground floor contains a multimedia hall, with a memorial room bearing the names of the victims above it. On the plateau of Ražovljeva glavica, a tank and an armoured vehicle stand beside a Croatian flag. Together with the hill’s history, these sites form a solemn, distinctive part of the local landscape.
Squares, Traditions and Commemorative Days
Trg dr. Franje Tuđmana is the centre of Škabrnja and serves as a venue for larger municipal and church events. The square is home to a 340-centimetre-tall bronze monument to Dr. Franjo Tuđman, installed on 22 September 2001.
Municipality Day is traditionally observed on 18 October. It includes the laying of wreaths at the cemetery of St. Luke; the programme may vary from year to year. Remembrance is also held annually on 18 November at the mass grave monument, where wreaths are laid and candles lit. The specific programme may change.
The KUD Škabrnja cultural association was founded in 2000 to preserve local customs and regional folklore through music and dance. Culture here is expressed not only through historic buildings and memorial sites, but also through traditions maintained by the community.
Olive Oil and Maraska Cherries
Olive growing and olive oil production have a long tradition in the municipality. Fruit growing also shapes local agriculture: the Maraska sour cherry is the most widely grown fruit crop. A smaller orchard at the Kod bunara site covers 0.4 hectares and contains about 150 trees. Traditionally, Maraska cherries are used to make liqueurs, spirits, vitamin syrups, juices and jams; they are also frozen or dried.
These agricultural traditions offer a different perspective on the municipality, complementing its churches and memorial sites. They tell the story of cultivation and processing, without being associated with any particular public tasting venue.
Sport and Getting Around
The municipal Vlačine sports centre covers about 55,000 square metres. It includes a football pitch, a small-sided football pitch, a padel court, a multipurpose court, a basketball court and an outdoor fitness area. All the courts and pitches are lit, so they can be used after sunset. If you plan to use a particular facility, check its current availability before your visit.
