Pirovac combines medieval town history and church art with a coastal landscape of natural beaches, bays, and scenic views. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore historic buildings and their details, or focus on the bay and activities on the water.

A Walled Island with Medieval Roots

Pirovac’s Old Town was a medieval settlement and fortress. It was first mentioned in 1298 as the property of the Šubić family. Until the mid-19th century, Pirovac was a walled island; at the beginning of the 20th century, an embankment connected the historic settlement to the mainland. These dates trace different stages in the town’s history.

Sections of 16th-century walls survive at Vrata sela. The gate was built in 1505 by Count Petar Draganić to defend against the Ottomans. A Templar cross is carved into the foot of the gate. The gate and remnants of the walls thus tell not only of the town’s fortifications, but also of its medieval form.

Church Art and the Draganić-Vrančić Family Castle

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built in the 18th century on the foundations of an older church dating from 1506. Its façade features a statue of the Archangel Gabriel by Bonino da Milano. Another work by the same artist can be seen in the Draganić-Vrančić family cemetery chapel: a Gothic sarcophagus with a relief of the Virgin Mary, dated 1429.

The Draganić-Vrančić Castle also brings together different cultural influences. It was expanded and decorated in the Neo-Renaissance style; Moorish influence can be seen in the design of its chimneys. The castle housed a valuable family library. Valuable documents and objects significant to Croatian history were also kept there. Together with the churches and the gate, these buildings give Pirovac’s history specific places and details.

Bay, Views, and Nature

The Makirina promenade and its viewpoint offer panoramic views over Pirovac Bay and the Kornati archipelago. Check access conditions before your visit. The bay is also considered a habitat for pods of dolphins; sightings are not guaranteed.

Pirovac has numerous natural beaches and sandy coves. The island of Sustipanac lies directly offshore from the town and is used for swimming and sunbathing. So, alongside the views, time by the water and on the island offers another distinct focus for your trip.

Summer Programme and Activities on the Water

Pirovačko Cultural Summer is a recurring summer programme featuring fishermen’s evenings, concerts, exhibitions, and folk performances. Check the specific dates and programme before your trip. For freshwater fishing, nearby Lake Vrana is another destination, accessible via the Prosika Canal; check the applicable conditions and any permits required in advance.

Marina Pirovac is located in the town centre and can accommodate up to 200 boats. Boating from Pirovac offers trips to local bays and the island of Sustipanac. Kornati and Krka national parks are described as nearby destinations for sailing trips. This makes coastal exploration and longer excursions distinct ways to enjoy the water.
