Ružić brings together Meštrović’s heritage and a landscape shaped by Petrovo polje. At its heart is Crkva Presvetog Otkupitelja, the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer: it is a family tomb, a building dating from 1928 to 1930, and a landmark above the field. During your stay, you can focus on either cultural history or the landscape.

The tomb church: its construction and visiting

The church was built between 1928 and 1930, based on an architectural design by Ivan Meštrović. It is the tomb of Meštrović and his immediate family. This imposing stone cube stands on a 20-metre-high slope above Petrovo polje. Its location on Paraćeva glavica is associated with the village of Ružić.

The church is a ten-minute walk from Otavice; you can also reach the entrance by car. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit.

Further traces of history

The Chapel of Saint Mary in Ružić was rebuilt in the late 1980s. It houses a wooden Madonna believed to have come from Tyrol. The wider destination of Općina Ružić includes Gradac. A parish museum opened there in the crypt of the parish church in 2005. The parish church was built on the site of a medieval early Christian church dedicated to Saint Peter; parts of the older church remain in the crypt.

The Via Gabiniana offers another layer of history. This ancient route connected Burnum, Promona, Magnum, Andertium and Salona through the wider area around Ružić. The historical context thus extends beyond individual churches and chapels to a route linking several named places.

Landscape and waterways

Ružić lies on the edge of Moseć, whose slopes descend towards Petrovo polje and the Čikola. The wider destination of Općina Ružić lies between Svilaja and Moseć. Petrovo polje forms the central part of the municipality, and the Čikola flows through the field. The church’s location on a slope above the field and the broader landscape between the mountains offer two different scales for finding your bearings.

In the wider destination of Općina Ružić, the Otavac stream flows into the Čikola near Otavice; there are also small rapids on the Otavac near Otavice. An old watermill still stands on the Otavac near Otavice. The area is also associated with cheese traditionally made in a bag of animal hide.

Hiking in the wider region

The slopes of Svilaja and Moseć are designated for hiking and hunting recreation in the wider destination of Općina Ružić. In the wider destination of Općina Ružić, the mountaineering club Planinarsko društvo Svilaja maintains hiking trails on Svilaja and operates the Orlove stine mountain hut on its slopes. The designated recreational use in the wider destination covers both mountains; trail maintenance and the hut relate to Svilaja. If you plan to hike there, check local conditions.
