In Otavice, the architecture of a church and the family history of sculptor Ivan Meštrović come together. The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer is both a family mausoleum and a place with a distinctive architectural style. Together with the family home, which continues to form the centre of Otavice, it shapes the town’s cultural focal point.
Church and family history
The church was built from local stone between 1928 and 1930. Romanesque, early Christian and Mediterranean traditions come together in its design. The interior features altar reliefs and sculptures, including a monumental Christ. This combination of architectural features and commemorative tombs makes the church a special focus for anyone interested in architecture and history.
As a family mausoleum, it is the final resting place of Ivan Meštrović and his closest relatives. These include his parents and siblings, his wife Olga and their children. Meštrović lived in Otavice until he was 16. The family home continues to form the centre of the town; it is a ten-minute walk from the church. This makes it possible to include two places closely connected with the family history in a visit, while recognising their different functions.

Landscape and culture in Općina Ružić
Within the wider destination of Općina Ružić, Otavice lies on the eastern edge of Petrovo polje. Općina Ružić lies between the Svilaja and Moseć mountains; the Čikola River flows through Petrovo polje. Behind Otavice rises Svilaja, with its pastures and forests. Near Otavice, the Otavac stream flows into the Čikola. There is also a once-important mill and small rapids on a stream in the surrounding area. These landscape features add the wider setting of Općina Ružić to Otavice’s cultural focus.
The historical heritage of Općina Ružić also extends beyond the Meštrović story. In the first centuries AD, Municipium Magnum, an important urban centre in the Dalmatian hinterland, stood on Balina glavica in Umljanovići. In the decades before Christ, the fortified Illyrian-Dalmatian city of Sinodium stood in the same location. The two names represent different historical periods at the same site.
In Kljaci, the present-day parish church of St Elijah was built in 1871. Remains of an Old Croatian church dating from the 9th to 10th century were found nearby. In Gradac, remains of the early Christian Church of St Peter are preserved in the crypt of the parish church. These regional connections extend the historical perspective from the 20th-century family story to early Christian and older traces of settlement. Otavice remains the specific starting point for exploring the Meštrović story and the architecture of the Church of the Redeemer.
