Rab’s historic Old Town lies on a narrow peninsula bordered by ancient city walls and defined by four church towers. Anyone planning a stay focused on architectural history and culture will find a clear thematic thread here: from the Lapidarij to Romanesque and Baroque-influenced religious buildings and medieval fortifications. At the same time, the town’s character includes paths through a wooded park, beaches, cultural events, and a traditional cake.

Old Town and architectural history

The Gradski Lapidarij Rab displays 162 stone monuments dating from the 2nd or 3rd century to the end of the 18th century. The Lapidarij also presents the stylistic changes in Rab’s architecture in chronological order. The collection and its timeline offer a way to explore a long architectural history: different periods can be viewed side by side, rather than seeing individual buildings in isolation.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary includes a three-aisled Romanesque basilica dating from the 12th century, consecrated by Pope Alexander III in 1177. The Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew also has a long history: it has existed since the early 11th century. Its three-aisled church was renovated in the 18th century, with Romanesque elements preserved beneath Baroque decoration. Its bell tower is considered the oldest on Rab.

Other religious buildings offer their own distinctive features. St. Justina’s Church houses a museum of religious objects. St. Christopher’s Chapel has been converted into a lapidarium and museum. The complex of St. John the Evangelist is considered Rab’s only medieval religious building with an ambulatory around the altar. Summer concerts known as the Rab Music Evenings are held at the Church of the Holy Cross, built in the 13th century and renovated later. Check the program dates before your trip.

The fortifications and secular buildings also tell the story of different architectural periods. Construction of the city walls began in the 12th or 13th century. Kula smjelih was built in the 15th century to strengthen Rab’s fortress. The most significant parts of the Knežev-dvor complex date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The City Lodge was built in 1509 in the Renaissance style as an open, covered hall with a row of columns. The walls, palace sections, and loggia thus complement the religious architecture with further facets of the city’s history.

Cultural events and Rab traditions

During Rabska Fjera, the town becomes a stage where residents showcase traditional, artistic, and craft work. Rabska Fjera is a three-day celebration held from July 25 to 27, culminating in a knightly tournament. Check the event dates before your trip. Performances by the Rab Crossbowmen’s Association are held regularly on May 9, June 25, July 27, and August 15; you should confirm these dates before traveling as well.

Rapski Križi offers another example of cultural continuity: this votive tradition on Rab has been practiced in its current form since the 15th century. Together with the summer music evenings and Rabska Fjera events, it offers a range of cultural themes to consider when planning your trip. You can focus on historic buildings or plan your stay around the dates of a particular program.

Paths, park and beach

Komrčar Park lies inland from Rab’s Old Town. Its paths wind around wooded hills and descend to Rab’s beaches. A walk through the park offers a different experience from the concentration of architecture in the Old Town: here, the wooded hills and the route toward the coast shape your exploration.

For a longer outing, you can follow the 14-kilometer Rab–Maman Trail. It starts at the city walls and passes St. Euphemia Bay, Kampor, and Dumići Bay before reaching the islet of Maman. Check local route conditions and seasonal services before setting out. Banova Vila, a small beach next to the café of the same name, has a water polo court and a ramp providing sea access for people with special needs. Facilities may change seasonally, so check before your visit. Nearby Kandarola Beach can be reached by taxi boat from Rab or Palit.

Rab cuisine and finding accommodation

Rabska torta is part of Rab’s culinary tradition and makes a distinctive island souvenir. Its traditional recipe is closely guarded. It adds a local culinary dimension to your historical and scenic discoveries, so your stay need not be focused solely on buildings or events.

When looking for hotels in Rab, you can start by deciding whether you want to spend most of your time exploring the Old Town and its buildings, attending cultural events, or enjoying park paths and beaches as well.
